Kalibeck...so sorry...anything new from a vet?

by Kalibeck on 09 September 2010 - 17:09
Well, up this am & to the vets, which is about 1/4 mile from our home, & she was much brighter. Still has the tender spot on her side, the vet did think that it was residual from the SQ fluid she got, just in an area where a little puffiness would cause some soreness. Again, we'll go back if it doesn't resolve soon. And she's eating again! Cleaning her dish, & looking for more.....I'm still giving the boiled rice & beef, & in small portions, but she tried to steal my banana from me a few minutes ago when I finally got a chance to eat! And she's got her nose into everything again, & barking at the world when she goes outside, her usual self. Now if she has a regular stool I'll feel like we're over the hump! Thanks for your good thoughts & prayers, Lady Frost & Cheryl! jackie harris

Miss Ansgar is still doing Ok, although she has not yet passed any stool. She's eating, drinking, playing, deviling her sister & generally making a pest of herself. Vet called this Am bright & early to check on her, & they were very pleased with her progress! That's a great vet, they call & check on their patients!

Thanks Jackie! She's doing well, she even pooped! She's on antibiotics as well, & I keep trying to get her to take some yogurt, she'll take 1 lick, & look up at me like, "OK, I tried it." And if I try hiding it in her food, she won't eat any of it. She's a princess, all right. When they're sick, & need special treatments & medicine, how do you keep them from feeling spoiled?

Thank you, we love her. I guess I am giving up feeding her kibble, I am making a gently cooked dog food from ground beef, ground turkey, brown rice, mixed veggies, oatmeal, & eggs. We'll see how that sits with her. I made 10 lbs of it to start, & 1/2 went into the freezer. Wish me luck....If this works well, I may gradually switch them all over to a home cooked diet. Kind of a pain, but at least I know it's safe & healthy! jackie harris

Kalibeck...i wish you luck...
another recipe to have as an option that does not take your time (I am not adding slow cooker time..LOL)..place good chunk of beef in a slow cooker (I have a huge slow cooker where you can cook a full turkey) cook beef till its falling apart, add rice and double amount of water..add carrots, squash, sweet potatoes cut into cubes..leave it to cook for few more hours then mash it all with potato masher (I do that for puppy) or just mix it all up ....split it into zip lock bags and you have enough prepped food for weeks...i feed 3 dogs 1 home cook meal a day and one small meal in dog food....and that home made meal last me over a month...and if you calculate it, it cost me like 22 cents a dog plate....not bad..that slow cooker paid itself off more then once...
time to prep everything: 20 min (cutting veggies and stirring everything to mix it evenly)
cook time : 4-5 hours depending on meat size i usually cook 5 pound butt roast
result: i do this once a month sometimes less often in the winter when i heat the food up I add oatmeal and that nearly doubles the meal size, add some salmon oil...and serve..LOL.
