"There are certainly some females that have what it takes, but in overall numbers there are more males than females who posess the necessary traits."

Well put. Also, if a female is that strong, I bet most people would rather breed her than spay her.

Everyone here is using the word "drives", but most of what they are pointing out sound more like ingrained social behavior that have to do with pack-dynamics.  Females are in a more fluid social structure within the pack and have it ingrained into them that they will not be the pack's alpha, whereas males are essentially subservient to the Alpha male of the pack, but should the opportunity arise will wrest power away from the weakened pack leader.  That may make the female more atuned to the handler and we all know that the male will seek to establish dominance in the absence of a pack-leader.  Highly driven males tend to be extremely alpha and can be a chore to keep in their place.  Highly driven females also tend to be "bitch intolerant" as they assert themselves and present other challenges to the owner.  I've found males to be more overtly loyal/affectionate to the owner, while females may be easier to handle.   It is a matter of where your priorities lie.

I've had both males & females, and I like each for different reasons, but in the end, gender should only be important to a breeder.  I'd opt for the best (by that I mean best suited to my needs & objectives) dog available within what I find to be a reasonable market price.

I have titled 3 females....I went to a seminar this past weekend and a female was praised as being the best dog there.....and the first comments were..someone should breed her. Not one person asked about her pedigree:-)  By the way...she is a Eich von der Berger hochburg daughter.

I love bitches!!  I have two bitches, Yelli vom Kassler Kreuz SchH3, and her daughter Draze.  I also have a Yelli son, Kobra .  Someone forgot to tell my bitches they can't be alpha..... they just aren't as alpha as I.  They are as tough as a male.  The are fast, drivey, have hardness in the work, with a touch of nasty !!  Kobra is only 13 months, but developing nicely.

Basically, good dogs are good dogs.  All males aren't the same. All bitches aren't the same.  Dogs comes in varying levels in every sense of the work.

Judron,

I think you are saying pedigrees are important.  I agree!!  Otherwise, why have Pedigree Database?   Yelli is her father's daughter.  He is an Asko von der Lutter.

I also agree, though the breeding must be properly structured for us to be able to describe a given bloodline with any consistency.  For handler confident females, I trust in Cordon An-sat, as each of my two best examples to date were both linebred on that producer.

Basically the only difference is that a male is a little bigger and also stronger than a female, Other than that i see no differnece of note I have never trained a Female in work until i got Izzy she is as willing and able as any Male i have trained but she of course will not be as big or strong as a Male but she fits the bill well
