You needs a good GSD club, with patient trainers, and a nice kind motherly female GSD to run him with under supervision, so that she can tell him off as only mother types do, and let him see there is a better way than showing a JR your tonsils
Wish you were nearer.

I wouldn't given my dog a drug to curve something that is natural to him. Calming his behavior comes with training him and him growing up. Socializing him is the key - don't stop taking him places it will only get worse. The size of the dog doesn't matter in socialization either - small or large...
My personal opinion, you need to find some kindred spirits in the GSD world in your area - you aren't alone in how to rear a GSD..... These things you describe aren't anything new in a GSD - but to someone that isn't familiar with GSD might seem to see them as being a problem child....
I agree with misbeeb it is handler error when dogs do the things that you are describing. It can be corrected if you know how to handle it.....Obviously, your trainer doesn't if they have told you to put your dog a drug. Seems they would show you how to correct the behavior instead with "TRAINING".....a good trainer anyway....
You said you were in Plymouth - I found several Plymouths- which state are you in?
