Heather - I can't imagine having a set up around my bike like that - my boy would take me down with that....  I feel comfortable with just a leash at my right side.

My boy is actually doing a little better on his training.  He fixates a little for the first 50 yds - then he gets in a steady pace... My female is a steady 7.7 mph and my boy is 8.5 -after he gets into it....  He is still at my front of my bike - and close - I am not sure how to keep him from that ----Hodie, states - to correct him and he should be at my peddle - but I am not sure enough on the bike -he has a prong on but how do you correct  with a prong while riding down the road= to pull him back?  He is much too strong when we are on the bike  vs me on that bike.... I have even put my leg out - just seems to piss him off......then he barks at me - have to stop to correct that - then start back - then he is right back at the wheel....  anyway....

This is a challenge - rider vs working line /GSD....

The link that Tess gave is great - gives me a goal to work for.....

Yogie,

Whatever works is what you should do. The MOST important things for rider and dog is NOT to crash. For that reason, I strongly recommend that one NEVER affix the leash in any way to one's hand or arm, or other body part, or to the bike itself. If things start to go badly, you want to be able to let go immediately of the leash so the dog can get out of the way, and if you are having some problem, hopefully you can regain control. Many dogs will tire after a short while and that will help them settle in. As you do it more and more often, they will get the idea. Just be sure to not train too much, on asphalt or cement, watch the paw condition regardless of surface, and be careful about feeding and watering and temperatures.

Before Goran took his AD he had working with a Bike exactly 300 yards practice,
He sailed through the AD no problem  it really is no big deal if you can ride a Bike and are reasonably fit then you should be okay, There is no rule to say what side the dog must run at in the case of Goran the leash was held by the right hand some held it on the left, no tools used to keep the dog at length just get hold of the leash and go

Actually Steve1 there are rules that govern the AD - I am a member of the WDA and rules state -dog has to be on the right side, speeds must be 7.5 to 9.5 mph, there is a time frame to complete the AD as well  oh and the most important...cant have a beer breakfast when you stop for  the dog pee pee break....lol.,.so no worries - right side it will be - and I will not "afix" the dog to any part of me or the bike...and I will save my beer break to the end of the AD.....

Yogie Bear
I do not have a clue what you are talking about, You ask a question from us Guys, then you give me a complete novice it seems in your eyes a lesson in this and that, Yet i have already put three Dogs through the AD or UV what ever you want to call it
Goran had as i said had around 300yds running with a Cycle the day before the AD test that is all he ever saw of running with a cycle, yet he had no problem and they covered the course at approx 12.5 miles an hour and no beer break was given or asked for, and Gorry was as fresh as when he started but that is not the issue you are talking about to me
You say you are a member of the WDA thats okay
I myself am a member of the V.V.D.H and the SV so what we did in that trial with an SV judge taking it was wrong for you say you hold the Leash in the right side only according to your WDA rules, Well then the V.V.D.H and the SV and the Judge is wrong for that is what you are saying, so why then if you know so much do you need any conformation on anything to do with the AD test, the way you are replying to me is you do not need it but the governing bodies over here need straighting out by what you say for you are telling me i do not know what i am talking about
Well take a look at the Pic below, this is some of the Guys taking the AD same time as Goran look to the front and see which hand the Dog is being led by and one at the back there were 4 from about 12 entries in that particular AD test
However it seems those people who had the leash in the wrong hand should never have passed the test if you are correct and the Governing bodies in Germany and Belgium are wrong for that is what you are saying
It does not make any difference to me what you do or think is correct, but i never say something and mean something else, It is what it is

Clearly the V.V.D.H and the SV are wrong according to Yogibear, for hear we have an SV judge and yet he is allowing dogs to be handled ether side of a Cycle, which Yogi Bear says is not correct i must imform those powers to be that they are doing it incorrect, One such member of those Boards V.V.D.H and SV, i will see tonight training and ask him to get there house in order because they differ from what is said by others

Gee's Steve1 - you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?  I don't live in Europe and I have to go by the rules for  which I will be judged..I merely advised of the rules I will be going by.. I didn't ask for the rules anyway -  I simple ask for a guide to get my dog in shape and to get some idea about his focusing on the wheel...

I did not intend to insult you - but no reason to sling me around like a YAPPY LITTLE DOG!

As far as the coment about the beer break - that was in fun because that is actually in the WDA rule book...It was a joke --I couldn't imagine taking a beer break in the morning- but obviously you don't have much of a sense of humor...

So what I will say is, that each organization has different rules - and it is always a good idea to know them for whichever one of them you will be competing in....

I wish it was as simple as getting on the bike and going.  But it isn't that simple to me.

Yogie Bear
I am not like a Yappy little Dog, I am more like a German Shepherd that takes umbrage to an E Collar
So long as your Pup is not getting engaged  or in contact with  the Wheel of the Bike more so when turning then do not bother about it you will have a smoother ride if he stays in one place and less pull on the arm.
And i have a great sense of humour my last post above tells you that

Geez, steve, what's the matter with you?  You're so hostile.  YogieBear is correct - there ARE rules in the States, and also for USA the rule says the dog is to be on the right-hand side of the bike.  Bully for you that your dog had only 300 yards practice on the bike before the AD, that's nothing to brag about, but Yogie posted here because one of his dogs was having tire issues and he asked for help.  Good thing for him that he wasn't like you and that he did expose the dog to the bike ahead of time.

Nothing wrong with me, i just told Yogi what happened with Goran nothing wrong in that, It is no big deal Your sense of humour is different to ours in this side of the water Yogi was telling me details of the AD as if i was a dope or something that to us is not humour but being sarcastic in treating someone as if they did not know those details when they meaning me, and i  had already done it ,
However i must remember in the future that some of you are a touchy lot and are easily offended
One thing is sure Tessj10, It would not take much of a nick on a Pinch Collar to make you Squeal, so i guess you will have to be hamdled with Kid Gloves on
Now i am off to the training club with Izzy and she will not be able to take her AD until this coming  September after she is old enough for  her BH
