Good post. I had my puppy's name picked out before she was even born. The breeder gave my the letter "I" as her front name with his kennel name as the end. Her name was going to be "Ice", since my husband gave me the option of either a diamond ring or a puppy. It seemed perfect
The day she was born happened to be 9/11, so at the last minute I changed her name to Independence. Call name Indi.

WOW! I'm so glad that I found this forum! You are all such wonderful, helpful people! I truly appreciate all of your advice. I've decided to wait on a registered name until I contact the breeder again and find out how she goes about this. We three call names in mind, as of right now. It might end up being Magnum (being that he may be my husband's new "weapon"), Schafer (which is German for Shepherd), or Hagan (which is German for strong defense). Leaning toward Magnum or Hagan. However, that could change at any moment. We haven't even picked out our male yet....they don't even have their eyes open yet. So, it might be that when we see him and his actions, we'll come up with a completely different name. We'll see.
Vinegarjoe: We will actually be paying for the puppy ourselves. He is being purchased FIRST as our family dog. IF, and that is a BIG IF, my husband's department decides that they would like to add a K-9 to the force, they would pay for his training and reimburse for his cost but then would become their property. There are a lot of options to consider before we all decide which direction we're going.
Stacy: No, I don't have the pedigree of his parents on here yet. I haven't actually sat down and figured out how to do that yet. I haven't even had time to figure out how to attach a picture to my postings like all of you have! LOL I'm not computer illiterate but have a 15 month old daughter that keeps me quite busy! LOL Hopefully I can figure it out soon!
Thanks again to everyone. Please, feel free to be honest and tell me what you think about the names we've been tossing around!

My boyfriend is a Police Officer....the puppy that he kept from our last litter is named Glock. It is very fitting.

a call name for your pup is your personal choice,i would caution anyone to give a pup a rather "plain" name, lethal sounding names like "GLOCK" and so-on,to me shed a very negative light on the breed, and are usually used by (sometimes well meaning) people to hype a dog as being a "weapon",also those "whimsical" names,so often used by the "american show crowd",are some of the most rediculas names i've ever heard.also, attaching a name with "strong social meanings"?(protector of mankind)...pretty strong name to live up to for an "ankle biter"....hopefully he'll turn into the great dog that you have in mind...but pups(even well bred pups) don't always turn out as you'd like, and that "great name"turns into a rotting albatross about the dog's neck for the rest of his life.the toughest dog i know is named"TOMMY",a real brute...a german import trained in all phases,(tracking/ob/protection) but this boy will put you in the hospital(95 lbs.+ and nasty as hell),i love that name(tommy),to me names like JOHNNY,BERT,HARRY,DON,DOC,DOLF,HUGO,LARRY,TONY,ARE THE BEST NAMES(IMHO)...dogs are amazing,in their beauty and intellegence....the NAME doesn't make the dog,the DOG makes the NAME !!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jenni78. NO...goodness...NO! We will NOT be calling him "Xandy-Bear" or anything else like that! LOL I have horses as well and when I bought one of them many years ago, his name was/is Thunder but they called him "Thundy"! OMG We definitely will not being doing that to Xander.
vom ost see...you are entitled to your opinions but so is everyone else. Please, if you would like to respond to my posts, do not be so critical of others. Remember the saying, "if you don't have something nice to say, please don't say anything at all". I actually like Jyl's dog's name Glock! I think, as a police K-9, it is VERY fitting. The dog IS, in fact, the man's weapon! Fine if you don't like it but please keep it to yourself. You are also entitled to your opinion regarding our choice of Xander. However, German Shepherds are natural protectors. Do I expect my pup to be just because I named him a COOL name with a german meaning? NO! I expect that he is going to be a happy, healthy, and much loved member of my family with a really COOL, not so ordinary name! Thank you for responding and I'd love to hear more from you in the future as long as it is positive. Thanks!
A week from now Xander will be home and I cannot wait! OMG!

Ashlyn's Mom- Beware...I don't know about that name. Xander's the oddest dog I have ever had. LOL. As a pup, he RODE on my vacuum cleaner. Yes, he RODE it. I guess he figured it was just one more thing in the world that was there for his pleasure. People always tell me what a character he looks like, and that's just from pictures. Do not expect a nice, docile, normal dog if you name him Xander. Don't say I didn't warn you. I do love that name though, still. No matter how many times I've yelled it angrily, it still sounds good.
