Just remember, all dogs have drives....even tiny toy poodles...and dogs have diferent levels of drives and different temperment even from within the same litter. Just like brothers from the same family.

by Ibrahim on 30 October 2009 - 18:10

Yeah, I know but some have richer drives.

by SitasMom on 30 October 2009 - 19:10

I was thinking of Bentley, Rolls Royce, Jaguar - vs - Ford and Huandi        I thought it was a great joke!

by happyday on 30 October 2009 - 22:10

A dog isn't thankful for the roof you put over his head - that is funny - just like your children don't give you any appreciation for what you do for them.  They are a dog - they don't think of things that way.

Yes there are Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Jaguars - as well as Ford and Huandi's in GSD's.  But you know that is with any breed of dog.    But in comparing the expensive dogs to the cheaper dogs that way - not sure if I get that - mainly because - you can pay a million dollars for a Bentley and it still can have car trouble - and you can pay 9.99 for the Haundi and ride in it for 300,000 miles with no trouble.  Point is - you get what you put into your dog - Bentley or Haundi....

As well as ---Is that Bentley the high drive dog which I would want and you might hate - cause you let him in your house and he ate your couch?  My desires in a dog and what I think might be a Bentley - might be a Ford to you..... vs my Ford is your Bentley...

Picking of the puppy is important when you decide what you want in your dog.  You don't have to to schutzhund to make the dog.  Schutzhund is a sport and requires a high drive dog -but you can work with a lower drive dog - it is just harder to achieve your goals.  But if you just want a companion - you would look for something different in your puppy something different than a high drive dog.

You want dog that is friendly - not afraid - maybe one that isn't mouthy -  but picking a puppy is  a crap shoot - picking for schutzhund or a companion or any other purpose - you could look for a dog that doesnt have high drive - pick the puppy with the lower drive - and get a dog bouncing off the walls at 8 months.

Your comment on  doing harm to the dog if he doesn't do schutzhund.  "schutzhund is a sport that you can enjoy doing with your dog - but mainly is just a sport - to think that it would do harm not to participate in the sport is to say that if I don't play baseball - I will die..... Training your dog is the main goal ---- it is fun - the dog has a  job - the dog respects you --and he is all the better for it.

Oki, this is my opinion and as one is not worth more than the time it take to write it ;).

I think if you don't have time or resources to train your dog, you should not own one. Which dose not mean you need to be a professional trainer, but you need to do your homework and be ready to allocate your time to train and exercise the dog regularly. If you have no resources to afford or locate a trainer, get videos, Ivan Balabanov, and Bernhard flinks use simple method based on playing games with your dog and training it at the same time, this is something you can do on your own. Do you homework and choose a right breeder that is the most important thing you will do first. I don't believe in buying a dog from a parents that I can't see, not  just see I need to see them working, or behaving in their regular environment, I go even one extra step and wont buy a dog from first breeding, I require to see progeny if breeder is not able to show to me, I walk away. But than I don't buy from top breeding kennels, if Jim Hill would tell me that the dogs are good I would be pron to believe it, as his reputation speak for itself.
Second understand that dogs need structure, and leadership if you not ready to do that you should not own a dog. There is nothing worst than spoiled and untrained German Shepherd, and if any one will tell you other wise he has no idea what he is talking about. Can you train your dog on your own? yes, not just you can but you should, training and trainers are only 10% the remaining is 40% genetics, and 50% you. Not being able to learn (watch other trainers) etc is an issue, but many people do with out. Once again the most important thing is structure in a dog life, if you set up rules and you reinforce them on regular basis you will have awesome dog, unless there will be genetic issue, like aggression, fear, etc, thats where professional trainers come in to assist you. Second most important thing is your commitment, a lot of times we are excited by new dog and think that we will do everything with him, then the dog becomes obstacle. So make sure you committed.

Yes eventually all puppies go to some kind of home, not just that some of my favorite dogs were the runts of the litter, so be aware buying a pup is a crap shoot, sometimes you get everything you wanted and sometimes you will get shit. this is why doing your homework is so important. Hope this will help you a bit.
