I built my whelping box much larger, as we used it to keep the pups in after weening. The box was built using two foundation walls at a corner of my basement, and two 4'x8' plywood panels with a 2'x4' panel as a gate/door. I also used a tarp covering the floor with wood chips. This help keep the pups clean and fresh smelling, and easier to clean out. I had sold a pup to a Tufts Veterinarian who highly approved of the arrangement. Mom could easily get in and out of the pen, and the pups remained. Later, they had plenty of room to exercise.
