Maybe I am way behind you in information on this, but pellagra in man is the same as black tongue in dogs.... Is the black tongue a symptom of the kidney problem in this case?   I tried to copy and past links, but can't....  niacin in particular of the b bitamins is what they need.  B 12 may need to be ginve subq or at least use the sublingual.  I am not sure about all dogs, but EPI dogs don't utilize B12 as is and it will just pass through.
I give folate as a supplement and I crush 400 mcg and that he uses just fine.  I don't know about the other b vitamins.

best wishes....

I believe that niacin deficiency is rare due to better dog foods. I also believe there is also ulcers around the black spots.

Thank you to all
No, I was not aware of issues with Canidea!! Wow, he has dry we have been using & can after after a bad reaction to S/D. He just did not like it discontinued use at 1 1/2 month. Went back to dry Canidea (last two bags) I could not find a kibble he liked (Merrick brand, Royal Canin, Wild Somthing?). His analyse is elevated. Any recommended tratment for pet food poisoning from Canidea. Thank you again hope I can get him strong enough on homemade diet to survive.
God Bless

The black tongue is undetermined. Ohio State says that it may be do to lack of circulation. Vet speculates ulcers may appear. After seeing other GSD with black spots on tongue. It really does not appear the same since his tongue has varied in intensity or degree of coloring. And yes we have a mortgage payment in vet bills thus far. I'm just trying to find a dog with high protein in blood and normal urine. Dog food (Canidea Dry, thank you Peraewog) is now my hope. I already complained to Consumer affairs see if there is a cure, yet. Hope he can hold out....time & funds is the problem.
Thank you for the hope!

Hi Muri's family,
While you are going thru this with Muri make sure that you spend as much time with him as possible and doing things he likes to do within reason. If you get too stressed, he will be stressed too. Hang in there.
Always,
Cee

well 36 hours after removal of Canidea Dry Muri's tongue is pink? He is eating a new diet from yesterday forward permanently here it is Merrick Can, green beans (no salt), pumpkin (he has been constipated but, have been going finely normal), carrots, Yukon gold potatoes, granny smith apples, niacin, b-12, vitamin c, aluminum hydroxide, omega 3, COq10, pepcid AC. His very early results more alert, tongue discoloration decreased 90%, This is early but extremely encouraging. The vet gave us 2-4 months I am still hopeful to prove her wrong. We are fighting like guardians should. Hope to keep up good results. He is in God's hands.
Thank you everyone.

Cool, I am glad he is feeling better, I am glad you are keeping him on the aluminum hydrox and the pepcid. Take care.

You reported a very low red blood cell count in your first post. Has this resolved? Is his bloodwork normal now?

I just read this thread tonight and based on your reports, it does sound like Canidae was either the main problem or part of the problem. Good luck and I will  say a prayer for you and your dog.

Vet has wrote him off with congenital kidney disease. We are attempting to contact a vet who has worked the "Alfa-toxin" in our area of 4 dogs recovered with this vet who is also a breeder. He is responding very well with the home-made diet along with dietary supplements thus far. I don't believe by his numbers will improve for at least 7-10 days (reading) and blood test we believe will be necessary after 4 weeks unless the condition returns. He is at acting more himself. We need to fight the anemia & phosphorus. So, there is no further damage done to kidneys. I believe the body is fighting to destroy the bad blood cells, just have to watch the bone marrow. Hope we are right but I finally feel we found the cause of black tongue I will attempt to show pictures of the day before & after of the tongue.......amazing but very very disturbing. I am 150% certain that the food caused the discoloration which not local vet or a Doctor of internal medicine from Ohio State & my personal cardiologist could reasonably explain. The rise in his Amylase was a clue for us. Thank you to everyone & God Bless your families.

just an update (7 days removed from Canidea) Muri, is looking very good activity increased (just want him to come along slow) at least 100% bouncing off walls seems like he is making up for lost time. In 3 weeks we plan on another blood test. Actively seeking new vet came to conclusion on diet and using a veterinarian that can prove diagnose (sorry vet's out there) 100%. We feel it is important to gradually increase his activity it took 3 months to get here. Hope everyone is doing better, God Bless.
