Oli has final say on the TOS. I suppose that might not be good enough because the moderators might have some say in it. Geez.

The TOS we are using now was borrowed off another site back in 2003ish. I think after almost 8 years of using something that is not working, it is time for a change.

Now I could be wrong, but I have never seen a forum allow some 3rd party to draw up the TOS and I have never seen a forum allow the members to make the TOS.

My question is who do you want to draw up the new TOS? *rhetorical question*   I say the site owner should have final say.

Regards,
GSD

Hi Beetree,
Welcome back!

I'm all for moderation, but I must say I'm not a fan of these "undetermined bans."  Perhaps, when you re-write the TOS you can spell out the punishments for those "naughty" members who are getting banned.  I'd also like to see a moderator give a clear explanation for deleting threads after they delete them.  I have received several PM's from members stating their threads have been deleted and they have no idea why.  As I have said before, members would appreciate knowing the reason their thread was deleted at the time of deletion.  It is obvious on some threads why it was deleted, but other deletions raise a lot of questions.  Stating it violates TOS # 8 is a little weak since most do not read, study or memorize the TOS.

I generally just use common sense rather than reading the TOS, but that method has left me confused.  I suppose common sense is the least common of all senses.  It's not a big deal for me since I don't post as much as I used too; just sharing some concerns I received in several PM's.

Slamdunc wrote that ---Stating it violates TOS # 8 is a little weak since most do not read, study or memorize the TOS.--

Study or memorize, of course not. But every member of this board (and any internet board) is expected to read the TOS and abide by them. It's what you agree to by posting here.

Telling a poster specifically what TOS they have violated - you can't get clearer or more specific than that.

It's every member's responsibility to be familiar with the Terms of Service of this site. Don't know them? YOUR responsibility, not Oli's, not the mods, not your buddies you whine to when you violate them.

Here's the link. No excuses. Again, you don't agree with them, you don't post here. Oli's board, Oli's rules. Quote: "By using this messaging system, you agree to abide by [the Terms of Usage and Conditions of Service]."

Exactly. So read the TOS.

Hi
I think it abominable that someone like Beetree should ever be banned in the first place. The problem is with this Moderation now is people are being sent in the corner of the classroom with the D hat on if they, or i should say if we say anything the Mods do not like or think out of turn
Now the owner of this site and the Mods should respect people more than they do at the present  time,Now they give a few days or a week or two's Ban then let them back into the Forum, That is humiliating a grown up person, It is like saying you go to Jail until you mind your ways.
Maybe i have lived in a different era than most on this Forum. But i think the right way to go is  this,
If you get banned then MODS  DO THE JOB RIGHT, Make the ban really mean something like a 12 month ban or better still a life ban, then It will not look as if grown ups are being treated like Children because with this present practice of banning that is what you are doing to some of the Guys
Now of late i have stayed away and filtered back to the forum, But for me if i get banned  make it a life ban.
Me' i have done more, seen more than probably any Mod here in my lifetime and i for one will not be treated as a Child. So should i ever get banned they can make it life because i will never come back There is such a thing as Pride and by banning you are taking a part of that away from a person

So steve, your suggestion to Oli is that when people violate the terms of service they should be permanently removed?

Cool.

Fenris,
Did I hit a nerve?  You seem to be extremely sensitive.  No need to kill the messenger.  On some forums moderators appreciate feed back from it's members, apparently that is not the case here.

I was not making excuses and I haven't violated the TOS.  I didn't say I didn't agree with the TOS, I stated clearly that I don't agree with "undetermined bans."  Banning a user for an undetermined amount of time is ridiculous, IMHO.  Hey, no excuses....I'll just ban myself for an undetermined amount of time and save you the trouble.

Geez, sighs, rolls eyes and shakes his head.................................................................

I will say that all moderators are told to contact members if they delete something. I really cannot for the life of me figure why they would send a pm asking why something was deleted to another member.

I have said numerous times on the forum, that I am to be contacted if anyone has problems or needs something answered about the mods or moderating. I cannot fix it if pm's go to someone else.

"Stating it violates TOS # 8 is a little weak since most do not read, study or memorize the TOS."

Not weak at all. It references the TOS and gives a number to the rule that was broken. Plus, if you do not know if what you are about to post is against the TOS, feel free to read it before you post.

The rules have been in place since 2003 or so and nobody knows them? Sorry, I do not buy that one.

Most of the rules have to do with common respect and deciency and people do not know this? Sorry, again I do not buy that at all.

Terms of Service

by Fenris on 06 February 2011 - 16:02

No nerve, Slamdunc. You and some others on here just needed a reality check. You openly state that not only you, but "most people" don't even look at Oli's TOS and then complain that when told people violate certain Terms of Service, they don't understand what that means, because they can't be bothered to go look them up, and oh boo hoo the mods are so unfair because they expect me to actually read the agreement I accepted when joining this site.

Doesn't cut it.

Now, I do agree with you on the "undetermined bans" thing. 3 strikes and you're gone is my opinion. But I'm not Oli so I don't get to make that choice. We'll see what he comes up with once the new TOS are out. Since you and other people don't bother to read them, guess you'll all just have to continue to complain about not understanding why things get removed.

Tess
Yes' I would rather be banned for all time than be treated like a child at least you would be then treated as a grown up with a life ban
