That is all they need to maintain ideal body weight and condition.

The female that only gets 1.5 cups gains weight at the smell of food and her activity level is high. We do 2X week SAR training and 3 times a week bike riding of 2 miles. She would eat until she barfed and then gobble that back up.. garbage gut can eat anything and still have awesome stools. She is not altered, so it is not due to "lazy dog" syndrome.

The one that eats 2.5 cups when younger would eat 4 to maintain and as she has gotten older the ammt needed to maintain weight has gone down slightly. She too gets bike rides, plays ball and goes hiking.

This would be ideal, actually if you think about it. My dogs do very poorly on super premium food and awesome on middle of the road food. I believe we have taken sensitive skin, stomaches, etc.. as the norm. I don't want a dog that I have to constantly battle to find a food that agrees with it. My dogs are healthy and go to the vet every 3 years for their rabies shot and have gone for the occasional spider bite but nothing else.

IMO if it's not broke, don't fix it.

BTW I do feed the supplement Nupro Silver

My feeding schedule:

9 yr old Male Shep- 3 cups a day
4 yr old Female Shep- 4 cups a day
3 yr old female shep- 4 cups a day
3 yr old female mali- 4 cups a day
11 month old male shep- 6-8 cups a day ( he is hard to keep weight on for some reason)

I mix a 34 lb bag of Purina One & a 37 lb bag Pro Plan Chicken Shredder together and it lasts 1 1/2 weeks -2 weeks if I am lucky.  Costwise about $60 every 2 weeks.  Maybe I will cut out the Shredder, didn't realize the ingredients changed that much...

If you can find it, and that's a big IF Pro plan still has the origional chicken and rice formula marked as all life stages in the origional 37.5lb bags. For the life of me, I can't find it but when I do, I will be using it. That is what my dogs were origionally eating until they changed the formula adding soy and glycerin, decreasing the poundage of the bags and raising the price. Gotta love the dog food companies.

As far as I know they no longer make the good quality dog foods in the 50 pound bags. I sure wish they did!! There are not that many companies that still make the food in 40 pound bags...at Petco where I work, there are only 2 brands that still make 40 pound bags...that is Iams and Eukanuba. Which is owned by the same company (Proctor and Gamble). I also know that the Diamond Naturals still has 40 pound bags (althought it is not sold at Petco).
