Cut him back to 1 1/2 cups of food three times a day.  5 cups is a lot especially all at once.  If you can't do lunch because you are not home then do 2 cups twice a day for the rest of his life, more if he isn't holding his weight but that should do it as far as being enough.  GSD should be fed multiple times to help avoid bloat if nothing else.

Wow.. you guys must work the heck out of your dogs do need to feed them that much food in a day!  Unless the dog is a pup.. I wouldnt recommend feeding over 1.5 cups twice a day...

With prolonged diarrhea, I basically just treat it as if the dog has a parasite and don't waste any time trying to figure out what it is, while the dog only becomes more sick and creates more mess.  I've never had a fecal come back with anything even when the vet recommends treatment, usually because the dog is at risk of becomming dehydrated.  If I suspected giardia, I'd do a round of Panacur, double dose.  If something else, I'd give my ivermectin (monthly heartworm but also kills hooks, whips, and roundworms) and a round of metronidazole/flagyl which treats anaerobic and zoonic bacterias.  This is all stuff that I just keep on hand.

I usually feed him three cups in the summer and four in the winter, sometimes five if he seems to be getting skinny.  His ribs are always visible.

By the way, his stool continues to be perfect since I split the feed times.
