Sorry 4pack, he's not for sale.  I'm just trying to learn lines I guess.  I look at a pedigree and I see titles.  I'm not familiar with the dogs like Adi is so I'm throwing things out there and asking questions in the hopes that some of what I get back sticks.  The dog belongs to a friend of mine.  I watch him on the training field and I just love this dog.  I'm trying to figure out why I like him.  A new club member volunteered to take a bite at training and his comment was something like "Holy $hit! what was that?".  We don't normally let newbies take a bite from Pike because he does have an alligator grip and incredible strength.  He also pulls the helper around to the left if they let him.  I've seen every helper that's worked him stagger under his power.  I'm hoping to see a title on him this coming year.  If he wasn't so head strong he would have one by now.  He's sleeve happy but I've seen incredible improvement over the last few months.  He is usually the last dog worked and I always stick around to watch.  So I'm trying to figure out how you get an animal like this speaking strictly of breeding not training etc.  I want to one day be able to look at a pedigree and know the dogs and where they come from.

Thanks for the replies!!

pedigree is excellent.....what do you mean by head strong? what do you mean by sleeve happy? How old is he?

I think he is about 5yrs and I mean he has a mind of his own and tends to focus solely on the sleeve to the point of being out of control, will not aus etc.  Last year if he was off leash and someone threw a sleeve on the field he would stop at nothing to get to that sleeve and run off with it.  When a dog is as strong as Pike the helper sometimes had to just let him have the sleeve because he wouldn't let go and the helper couldn't hold him anymore.  Then he would take a victory lap around the field and refuse to bring back the sleeve.  He will now to bite, aus, bite, aus, bite, aus all day long.  But if he doesn't get his reward bite and run he gets frustrated and sometimes just takes it.  His owner/trainer is working on building his threshold.  I've only seen Pike lose his temper once and I'll just say it's a good thing his handler has long arms and is tall enough to hold him out and up until he calms down.  One helper irritated Pike enough he went past the sleeve and hit the hard plastic shoulder cover.  I'm not sure but I think that was in response to getting his toes stepped on.

Pike could easily become handler aggressive but he has a good owner willing to work with him and around him as necessary.   He is working him on a tie back with lead and Pike will let the helper back him up, bark & hold, bark & back the helper up all without a bite.  He hushes when told (usually) and will aus 98% of the time...but that other 2% will keep him from getting a title because when he decides not to aus, he's not going to.  I love to see them take him off lead and do a courage test.  He has so much speed and power when he hits that the helper staggers and fights for balance while Pike is pulling him around to the left.  Right how as far as Pike is concerned, it's all about the sleeve.
