The first one showed signs of being "poorly" at 12hrs and passed away the next day.  The second one was fine until about 24hrs and then went very rapidly, probably within the hour.  The others currently appear well.

Both the pups who died were the first ones to be born, and the mum did take quite a long time with the early parts of her labour (started pacing and bed digging on the saturday night and pups didnt start arriving till Monday night), so we are wondering whether they maybe spent too long travelling through the birth canal.  Also the 1st one who died was the smallest by 100g.

Sorry about your trouble.
Anything is possible, but it is probably Herpes virus. Very common. Puppy usually cries like a seagull. May have purple belly and dies within 3 days.  If you cut the dead pup open it will have purple pin head size dots on kidneys.  This problem is usually self correcting in next litter. Keep the pups warm, above 80*F and below 90*F. If you want to know more goggle : Canine Herpes virus.

One old fashion breeder advised me when I started ...  to assist thru birth, then be sure that the pups are warm and dry that the mother is producing milk... and leave them alone!  That nature has a way of sorting out issues that we as humans might rescue creating weak puppies, or allowing genetic problems that nature would have removed to survive.

I can't honestly say I was ever able to take that advice... but there's probably a grain of truth in it.

When I started breeding, I was advised to help, but not to try too hard.

What is interesting, is that the other dogs in the house (not in the same room) didn't settle after the pups were born, until after the 2nd pup had died.  Surely this is an indicator that something was obviously wrong.  The pups mum was also very edgy until after the 2nd  had died, and now is very relaxed and settled.

Mama usually knows when something isn't right.  Sometimes she will push the pup away from the others.  When that happens you can kiss the pup goodbye.  Sorry to hear about your problems, how heartbreaking for you.  Hope everything is going well now.

Hi

I lost the first pup a day after birth ,and the second ,6 days later. The remaining 3 are fine even now.(month later)This is new to me.The pup becomes weak ,would not take the nipple ,and feels cooler than the others. The mom rejects him...is that fading puppy syndrome?
