No, 16 weeks or 4 months is the minimum.

What did the examining vets say? if I understand Penn Hip correctly they make comparisons to other GSD's of the same age to determine the degree of laxity. We can't tell that from looking at films. Frankly I've never seen a hip xray of a dog this young done specifically to evaluate hips conformation, so have no clue if it's normal or not. The vet who did the procedure should be able to tell you that.

PennHip is just a more expensive and dangerous way to do something of limited utility as a PREDICTOR of future hip development.  Skeletal growth is nowhere near finished before 10-12 months in a GSD .. earlier than this maybe 50/50 chance the results are predictive .. PennHip is as much fantasy as fact at 4 months .. the correlation between PennHip at 4 months and real hips at 3-4 years is what matters and it is not all that good .. just slightly better than X-ray at 4 months which is also a poor predictor.  The best predictor of hips at 2 years is X-ray at 2 years and even those results can vary with who takes the X-rays and who grades them.

Well the vet said that pennhip has a number system they go by so we would have to wait for the results. Im just wondering if they look good or not really.
i understand hips are not fully developed until about two years of age but there is nothing wrong with doing them now to see what im dealing with than to wait until its two years old. They can always be redone at two just to see but for now i i want to know how it looks cause some dogs do show hip dysplasia at this age in xrays.

Maybe some of the experts can come on here and help you.  Personally, if this was my dog I would want to see the sockets a bit deeper, so in my opinion I feel the sockets a bit shallow.  Should that change, I am not sure.  I have done regular hip x-rays at 4 months and the ones I did looked MUCH less shallow and the ball and socket was much tighter fit.  Is this a GSD?  So if I were to grade these at this time I would say fair.  Best of luck for your dog,  Nan

Looks like a young puppy whose joints are not fully ossified nor fully developed. In 20 years, I've never xrayed or PennHipped a 4 month old--it's just too much guesswork. I'd only do it if the pup is already showing some issues that I'm trying to diagnose. Any text on hip development explains that some of formation of the hip is created "like a thumb digging into a ball of clay" -- so there's so much that is in flux right now with your puppy.

However, the worst of the worst hips at this age show much less in the way of a "cup"--so I suspect your pups hips are going to come back just fine.

At 4 months the hip sockets are still in the process of forming, the growth plates are still open as we can easily see in these xrays.. Most lay people cannot say if they are going to be deep or tight enough or not.  Also we do not know if a wedge/fulcrum was use for the traditional views. OFA will also give a prelim opinion on an xray of a 4 month old. They claim they have a high rate of predicting correct adult hip conformation on dogs of this age. There's the option to send one of the xrays to them if another opinion is wanted.

Sorry, but there is no way I'd ever want to have this procedure done on a 4 month old puppy. The thought of general anesthesia on a dog this young would be a concern and the distraction process would be another. To each his own I guess.
