Hello all, I am wanting to ask anyone who has ideas of what the "normal" height at the withers a 6 month old GSD male pup should be?  I have a showline male imported from Hungary, and he seems VERY small to me, so I'm hoping some of you out there has some 5-7 month old male pups they can measure to withers so I can see if my guy is at least within the proper range.  My pup does seem to have nice heavy bone and good substance, he's just "short" statured!  He's been on Blue Wilderness Puppy, with a raw leg quarter daily in addition.  So let's hear from you all out there with similar age boys please, and thanks in advance!  I don't want an oversized boy, just one that will conform to breed standard.

My male now 8 months old, I was always worried about height and weight, Just a word of advise let them grow.... as long as they are healthy and it sounds like your feeding your boy well, just let him grow. Depending on alot of things the growth will vary. I saw klaus Shoot up around 7 months almost over night it seemed like to me  attached is a photo at 6 months

Thanks for your pics/comments.  I'm not really worried, just wonder if he'd be considered in average range for his age?  My other male pup, one month older, towers over this boy by about 3".  Would love to hear from others at to exact heights at this age?

55 -60cm or 22"-24" at 6 months is normal for males.

Most males gain 1 inch (2.5cm) from 6-7m, and then another inch (another 2.5cm) after that.

Some 6m old pups are a bit soggy in their posture and will tighten up, so they will gain even more height.

So if he is shorter than 22" or 55cm at 6m, he will likely be on the short side.

My tallest male (68cm) was 63.5cm at 6 months.

My shortest male (65cm) was 60cm at 6 months.

Thanks for the exact measurements, he is NOT that big at all!  I will measure him tomorrow and post, but I'm thinking he may be about 20-21" now.

OK so I was right on, he is between 20 and 21" now, will turn 6 months old this week.  So that seems a bit short to me, anyone else out there care to comment? Or send their pups height at this age?  He can be seen on pdb, under "Viernheimi Unik"  pictured at 4 1/2 months. See how "short" he is?

If he is of normal weight and health, then he will be on the short side ("klein").  But if he has had some medical issues -- or if you are starving him (or someone before you fed him low quality food or too little of it) he may be never live up to his potential.

Keep in mind that if he is 20-21" now he will be about 23" at maturity -- at the bottom of the range, but just about there.  As tall as the average female, or even a little bit taller.  How are his proportions otherwise?

You might want to add very high quality food to his diet for the next two critical months.  6-8 months is make or break for many medium breed dogs.

To MVE-  I imported him and an unrelated female pup both together from same kennel in Hungary, both showlines. At 8 wks when I got them, the female was 7# and the male very tiny at 4# so he was runty at the start.  I kept him on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy, a VERY high quality food, 32% protein, kept his bowl full all the time, so he got all he wanted to eat all the time, he also got a raw chicken leg/thigh quarter a day, plus a multi-vitamin.  So I know it's not due to diet/lack of food/nutrition.  He can be seen here on pdb under his name, Viernheimi Unik, at 4 months old, if you want to see his bone/proportions.  I think other than his height he is very nicely built and in good weight/coat.  Just small!  I will definitely try your suggestion of giving him the very best food in the next 2 critical months, but don't think there is any better food than what's he's been on, Blue is supposed to be one of the top all natural foods from what I'm told.  The female pup is much bigger than he is, and always has been.
