I got the comfortis info directly from the manufacturer. why take the chance if you have breeding animals? that's my take. It also reacts with ivermectin. I had a dog with major sezures (sp?) and that's why we talked with the manufacturer. Turns out they were from the 2 drugs together and that's when they told me not to give it to breeding animals anyway.

Hmm, the one I ordered, "Program", it states it's safe for pregnant females. However it also says that it does NOT kill adult fleas.....   Here is what it says about what I ordered.

Oral control that prevents immature forms of fleas from becoming fertile adults. Program works by inhibiting the production of chitin in insect eggs cutting the life cycle short. This ensures that juvenile forms do not become biting, breeding adult fleas. Simply give your dog a tasty treat with a meal once a month and let the IDI (Insect Development Inhibitor) lufenuron do its work. Can be used in combination with flea adulticide (such as Frontline Top Spot) to kill existing adult fleas. Package contains six doses. For dogs over six weeks old. Guaranteed USA Supplier.

We/I was specificly speaking of 'COMFORTIS" only. Yes, there are many other products that are safe for pregnant and breeding animals.

I know you were specifically speaking about Comfortis.  That's why I said "the one I ordered"      Others were talking about Nematodes, not just Comfortis, and in my first post I said something about Program.

This is what I have used for years with all my dogs. I have never had any problems using this product...I am concerned about everything I hear about poisons/chemicals ....We have a high rate of heart worm cases in my area and that concerns me too.......What to do.....

It really depends on your geographical location as to what products for flea/tick control are doing their job. I live in North Carolina.
My husband is a veterinarian, I am a tech, we own a veterinary hospital, so we try to be sure our clients are happy with the products we recommend.

Advantage and or Advantix are not products we have carried for several years, as they did not seem to be doing the job in our area, based on client reporting. Likewise with Frontline, although it does still seem to do a good job for ticks, but not fleas. FYI, the patent has run out and you will start to see the chemical in Frontline in some products produced by, ummmm I forget if it is Harts or Sargeants, but one of them will be OTC this year. Cheap is as cheap does....

Comfortis is great for fleas, we recommend it for all of our FAD dogs, it has a quick kill and is a good product. The most common "side effect" is vomiting  following administration. It is very important to give with a meal, even then you may see vomiting. The manufacturere states that if the product is kept down for 1 hour then you have efficacy.

Elanco is coming out with a new product that combines Comfortis (for fleas) and Interceptor (for heartworm prevention) in one monthly pill. We attended a seminar about the product (Trifexis) last week. There seems to be a tendency for less vomiting with the combination product, (a good thing) and they report an unexplained, perhaps, 'symbiotic" relaionship, by which both products work better, (unsubstantiated by independent study as yet). i am thinking that we will probably carry this product.

They have also come out with a new topical flea product for cats, Assurity, that look very promising.

One other product that I like is Vectra 3D. It is a topical for flea and tick for dogs. We started carrying it last year and I have been pleased with it. I use it exclusively on our dogs (8 GSD's and the rat terrier) last year and had no problems with fleas, ticks or side effects.

One must be very careful when dealing with a flea problem in households. If there are fleas on the pets, there are fleas in the environment, the house, the yard, the kennel, the dog lot, the whatever. The environment must be treated to control the problem. Bomb it, have the exterminator out whatever it takes to gain control. A flea product, systemic or topical on the dog cannot control the problem alone.

GSDguy,

Sorry been busy. We only bought them 1 time in 2007 and have not needed to buy them as of yet. They hibernate in the winter and breed when they are awake. They have Nematodes for all regions of the USA. If you live in Mexico, or Florida then just buy the Nematodes that will work for that area. They also do take care of fleas and a number of other pests. I don't remember the actual size that we purchased, but I know it was the small size. You can also dust the dog's with DE but make sure to wear a mask when doing so. We will buy some more Nematodes for this year just to replenish the one's that we bought in 2007. It was Well Worth the money, and it's all natural. You can also look at your local garden store. Some times they carry them there, but for us we had to buy them off of the internet.
