Good evening all,
Just a general question.

My female will turn 3 the end of August.  We're thinking about getting a male in the near future, but i'm a bit unsure of how she will handle a housemate. In the past she's been a bit dog agressive and territorial and this past 6 months shes been getting much better but I don't think I could trust her alone in the house with it for awhile anyway.  If we did get a male we would definitely get a pup.  so, my question is first of all do you think a pup would be the best choice over a bit older of a dog?  And secondly, would separating them when were gone be best ,and when were home they could be out together but with us close by- just in case?  I'd appreciate any advice, helpful hints, or your own experiences.

Thanks
Pam

We too had a female before we got a new male pup. She was 2 and very aggressive toward other animals that invaded her space. The little boy was 10wks when we brought him home. Our female would push him around and bark at him, so we never left them unattended together until he was about 6mths old. By then she had lost her distaste for him to a point, but would still push him away from our granddaughter.(The female and our granddaughter were raised as babies together). The funny thing about our dogs relationship was that when we were not with them they were best of friends! How funny!

Hi Pam,
Whether you get a young pup or older pup/dog, I would not leave them alone together unattended. Your older girl may start bullying the other dog and could seriously hurt her physically and mentally.
I have always been told to introduce the two dogs on neutral property and not to lavish too much attention on the pup in front of your female, especially at first. If she does act up, correct her immediately but don't pick up the pup and coddle it. It will only make her jealousy worse.
That's all I can think of for now...I'm sure you'll get better advice from others on here!
Best of Luck

I heard a trainer say to have them meet a few times if possible outside of the house, to cut down on the territorial issues.  Not sure how well it works.
