Hello.Prog test baseline was 0.9 7 days ago.  2 days ago it was taken and was 5.2 - the breeding will be approx 48 hours from that 5.2 level.  I know eggs need time to ripen but did we miss the boat?

The bitch is NOT that swollen at all and her blood was brown instead of the usual red.

As she is a maiden she will not signal to mate and so I cannot use her as a gauge.

Are we too late?

I know tests can be different depending on who does them but I would say that was spot on for mating her.  Our lab says the level approx doubles every 2 days, maybe a tiny bit more, so on that 2 days from that level is perfect.  Good luck with your mating.

Kmoat, what day is she? By the sounds of it she will be perfect in 2 - 3 days but they are all different. I have one girl that was never ready until day 21 at least one time it was day 26. Thank goodness she is retired, she was a devil to work out but she did give me 3 litters.

Hi - from the time I first saw crusting or dried blood it will be 14 days.

But what about the fact she is not swollen?

ps  - remember that the 5.2 was the level 2 DAYS ago!!

by Heather on 10 April 2009 - 12:04

The swelling things is not something I can help you with, sometimes bitches don't swell too much, it all depends on what she is like inside and if the male can get in easily enough.  If he can't then there may be something else wrong.  The level for mating is usually somewhere between 10 and 15, so if she is mated today, then you should be fine, providing all else is ok.

We have had females that don't swell greatly but they have still been mated no problems.  Good Luck.

On the day the blood test was 5.2, you may calculate a doubling 2 days later and another doubling after another 2 days, this would equate to 21, the ideal mating level is for me, between 25 and 40. Therefore I would aim to mate 5 days after the current 5.2 blood sample was taken. However I would have another blood test 2days after the last one, or at the very latest 3 days after the last one, in order to confirm my calculations and/or update them. It is crucial to remember the figure given is from the blood sample on the day it was taken, never forget this, because IDEXX LABS give the result the NEXT day, when they receive the sample.

There's 2 different reading out there for progesterone and there's a big differents in them. ng/ml and nmol/l 1ng/ml = 3.18nmol/l
You need about 2ng/ml for the LH surge and about 5ng/ml for ovulation.
There best breeding would be about 3 & 5 days pass the LH or 2 & 4 days pass ovulation.     What #'s do your lab use? 5.2ng/ml would be around ovulation or just pass and a breeding 2 day after sound to be right on. I would skip a day and bred her again. But 5.2nmol/l is early.

Well I called the lab - vom Fallsview you are correct.  They are using the "not so often used" nmol calculation.  That had confused us all.

So now we know you never missed the boat. You realy need to know what #'s the labs are using to read progesterone, good that you called. 5.2nmol/l is 1.63ng/ml. It would be nice if you could get another test to see where she at now, but if not bred day 3, 5, and day 7 if you can pass the 5.2. Let us know how it goes.
