I am seriously considering getting a new puppy. I have one problem..........

I unfortunatley have had parvo in my yard. I am wondering if there is an experienced working dog person in northern California who would be willing to foster the pup for about 1 month until it is completley vaccinated.

Anyone out there willing to help a guy out?

Why not just buy one that is vaccinated already? Or get breeder to keep him until he is? Be easier

I bought a new puppy several years ago that HAD parvo when I brought her home. She did not survive. I knew that I would have other puppies, so I went about disinfecting the premises. I used heavy-duty chlorine to disinfect. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get the chlorine for pools. It is about 20%, as opposed to the 5< % in bleach. Saturate your yard with it. I had spots that would grow NOTHING, not even weeds, for 8 years after treating it with a heavy chlorine solution. I have had three young puppies 7-8 weeks old since with no problem...other than spots that had no grass or vegetation. :-)

Okay those of you with more experience with Parvo can correct me if I am wrong, but I think that even if your pup is vaccinated your yard has parvo therefore your pup will still be exposed to it and can be a carrier so that anywhere you take your pup it will carry the parvo. For that matter, I think that you can also carry it on your shoes (unless you disinfect your clothes and shoes). At least that was how it was explained to me when I was getting half a litter and one pup died of parvo. I chose to give up those pups instead of bringing parvo to my house. As far as the pups age, I have a friend that lost several 6 month old siblings to parvo and they were vaccinated.

 Debbie:

I would not take a pup into any yard that has had parvo. Your shoes, tires ,  shovel, garbage cans, and  have no idea what else has come in contact with it is airborne but can be in ground and get on any one item and whallah.dog down.Vaccinations do not protect when it is on your premises. I do not and never will take a pup to a vets office. They come out to car , hands and shoes sprayed and no one enters my premises with vehicle or without being sprayed feet  ,shoes and hands wiped .You cannot be too careful. If you have hard winters, snow for periods of weeks , it may help kill the germ. Not sure of that.

Thank you AhsighEE that was what I thought, but I don't ever want to appear as though I know it all (there is always something new  to learn).  I know that Parvo  is some very serious stuff and it will kill very quickly. I think that because of the Parvo issue, GARD needs to rethink wanting a puppy/dog.  However it is ultimately their decision, Good Luck with that.

I edited my original post, as I forgot a critical element; my disinfection was BECAUSE a parvo-infected puppy was brought into my home. The virus can live in the ground for 2 years. As I mentioned, I have had three young puppies come into my home since, without any problems.

par for the course with this board, you get unsolicited judgmental comments from the peanut gallery.

Yes this is a problem and a risk, duh?

I am not usually paranoid about things like this. My incident was kind of a freak thing. The dog was on a plane for 11 hrs with 8 puppies from a puppy mill in OK. I have always taken puppies out and about as soon as they are able. I give my dogs a 1 year booster some dogs got another @ 3 yrs, some did not. Never had a problem, not in 30+ years of dogs.

With that said, I obviously have a situation here. My information from my vet is that once the pup reaches 16 weeks and is vaccinated, I should be OK. So the breeder said they would hold the pup back for awhile. If I can get 1 month from someone, the pup will be 16weeks.

I don't see the difference between my yard, Petsmart, or the neighborhood park at that point. If the pup gets sick, then it probably did not have that strong of an immune system anyway and would not be the hardiest dog.

As for being a carrier, if you or your dog steps in dogshit at the park, you can be a carrier. If you take your dog to a dog park, I can almost guarantee you are a "carrier".

I guess my line of work makes me see things in a different light. Just about every day, I have my hands all over some dirtbag that is HIV +, has Hep C, TB, or is carrying a dirty needle in their pocket. 6 months ago, I got spat on by someone who has Hep B. and TB. Got on my uniform, my hands, my face,I had only had my second of three shots for Hep B. I'm OK but if I was not healthy or had a compromised immune system I very well may have gotten sick. I have had guys spit blood on me and in the back of my car.

All you can do is prevent things the best you can. We are not God folks.

Mystere,

Thank you for some actual advice. I have thought about that but my yard is 1/3 acre. I have a 5 gallon bug sprayer I could use. Do you think this would work or are you saying you have to dump gallons of solution in the ground?

I still have not made up my mind about what I am going to do.
