Shannon has her 13th birthday coming up on Feb.16.  She is mentally sharp as a whip, vision is great, hearing not so good, and is having some trouble getting around with her hind end.  Her hips are in wonderful condition for such an elder, I should have had her OFA'd I'm quite sure they would have been an excellent, but she wasn't a breeding dog so we never did.  She has some spinal compression and a good deal of arthritis in her back, so that's the cause of her mobility issues.  She tries to romp and play with the new puppy, so I know she can't be suffering too much.

Here I am with my one and (still) only GSD, his name was Rökkvi and he died at 13 years of age.
This photo is taken his last week.

He was a once in a lifetime dog and  will be forever in my heart.

It's a tough gig to follow for any dog.

The GSD in my sig picture was born in May of 1991. She died in her sleep in August of 2005, at 14 years and 3 months.

She was a rescue, so I have no idea what her lines were, though a long-time breeder of GSD's said "she looks like the old fashioned Shepherds we used to have in Germany before the war." He would know, as he used to train GSD police dogs in Germany before he emigrated.

Here is a picture of her taken a year before she died:

She's doing a play bow and woof, asking for someone to throw a ball and play with her. Except for the
greying of her mask, you'd never know she was already 13.

The last 7 or 8 months of her life were not so happy, though. She had a bout of pancreatitis that spring,
and lost an awful lot of weight. She also slowed down a lot due to arthritis, especially in the one front leg,
which she'd injured a number of years before.  My husband died in November of 2004, and I wonder
how much his death had to do with her decline, as they were very bonded to each other.

The oldest one I have had died on November 2, 2005.  She was 13 1/2 years old.   My current oldest is 10 and counting...  I hope to put a Fh on him this year, now that he no longer Speedracers down the track.

Kamo and Magic

Our home bred litter mates, Kamo and Magic on their 13th birthday.
Both their parents also lived to be teenagers.

Magic at 14

Magic at just over 14 years old, she went peacefully to the Bridge not long after this photo was taken, as a result of a stroke.

Kamo at 14

Kamo at 14 1/2 years old, again photo taken not long before he left us.

Magic's daughter, Minty will turn 13 in May.
As our vet says, "we grow 'em old down here".
