Hi everyone i need your help! My bitch's kennel is made out of wood. I caught her chewing on the wood last night! My bitch is the stubborn sort and holds her own! So anyway i caught her chewing on the wood and i slapped her and gave her a good shouting! I think she consumed lillte teeny weeny pieces of it! Today she was coughing she passed her stool twice! Any suggestions? I will be taking her to vet tomorrow.

Why did you slap her?

I have a large tree in my backyard that is constantly shedding branches. The dogs think they are great chew toys, and are always chewing them and no doubt swallowing little bits, without harm. The only reason I'd worry about her chewing on the kennel would be because wood is often pressure-treated with toxic chemicals to keep it from rotting. I doubt very much your dog will be hurt by this, but if she's coughing, she MIGHT have a splinter caught in her throat, so a trip to the vet to check her out isn't a bad idea.

You might try painting the wood with something unpalatable, like bitter apple. If that doesn't work  you may have to get a metal kennel. (She'll probably eat plastic as well!)

gsdfanatic1964 i hope you dont think im a mean owner! I love her to death its just that she's very stubborn and i got very frustrated! Sunsilver i think your right! I dont think the paint is available in my country! But can i put a a bitter chemical that is put on the finger nails of young children to prevent them for bitting them? But i do have a metal crate!

I just realized my post was confusing, especially for someone who is from a non-English speaking country. Sorry! Will try to explain better!

Does the wood have a greenish colour to it? That means it has been treated with toxic chemicals to keep it from rotting. Do NOT let her chew on it!

If it is just plain wood that has not been painted, I don't think it will hurt her unless she got a sliver stuck in her throat.

Yes, you can treat the wood with something that tastes bad. Here in North America, there is a spray called Bitter Apple that is used to prevent chewing.  See if you can find it, or something similar.

No the wood is just has a natural colour to it. Its not greenish in colour. Sprays like bitter apple are available over here! Thankyou so much for helping me out sunsilver. She's going to the vet 2morro and ill him check her throat. Anyway when she started coughing i gave her some water. She has not coughed since then.

dont need a vet you need a different kind of dog house.     wood wont hurt them unless she slivers it...my welping boxes have little chew places all along the door way and on the opening where the wire goes for the open wire window....never hurt anyone yet.....take her dog house away.....she may decide if she wants a dog house to quit chewing it...ha ha ha

how old is this girl....give her a cow hoof or a round bone to chew      if in a kennel   tie the round bone with a cotton rope to the side of kennel...if she finds out how to unchew the rope ,,fine and dandy,,,will give her something to do.

and wont hurt her.

She is either bored or she is cutting teeth or likes to chew.....give her cow hooves...no toys or balls,,,,big hard treats if you have some   and round bones.

I agree with gsdfanatic why did you slap her? The only thing the dog gets from this is that there is pain associated with your touch. If you want to correct the dog in a way in which the dog will understand you need to grab her by the scruff of the neck shake her and tell her no or phoey so that she associates it with poor behavior. This is how a mother dog corrects a pup so it is a known pack behavior and after a time or two they know not to do it again.

My dog constantly eats wood.  In fact he has eaten half a weatherboard off my house!!!  I think he does it because he is highly strung, he is constantly needing to do something.  I have now given him a motor bike tyre that he flings around and can't destroy.  Perhaps your bitch needs something like this to keep her occupied?
