All I need to do is buy a bunch of everyday GS females one male breed them twice a year and set back and count the money. LOL Could I be called the "Best Working Ling Breeder" please please please.

It is amazing how many DUMB ASSES think that is all ther is to it. They should be breeding chickens at least you can eat them.

I am reminded of a story I heard, one where a businessman thought that $3500 was too much to spend on a protection dog. Soon afterwards, he was robbed and beat up. He then thought $3500 was very reasonable price. I just heard that story somewhere......... I would think that $5500 to save the breed is worth it. I will donate 1/100 to the purchase of that dog right now.   Another story. I met a man with a biz which included a good sum of cash being on hand most of the time. He bought a dog [ I liked this dog! he meant it, and we did all types of non-sport work like muzzle attacks and hidden arms] This dog was going to be very good at keeping some punk from stealing a couple of grand from him and oh yeah, the man's wife hated guns. Well one day a Lawyer told the man he might loose his house [ 7 digit type home] because his dog chewed up the maid when she showed up early one morning. Every american has the right to pursue happyness. May the dog you own not keep you from that pursuit or into a law suit.

If that $5500.00 dog would save the breed it will be worth it and I would buy him in a second, but it is still just a crap shoot. Would you buy a $5500 dog with zero training at a used dog salesman work?  I will bid my time and hope to find the right dog that is worth the money and train train train just to see if she is worthy to breed. That $5500 dog was a male anyway and for a breeding program I will start with a bitch. There are a lot of good males out there to breed to.  Law suits are always a possibility because there is a chance ones dog could get out, I do not take many chances with that. I have really enjoyed this discusion. :)

yes, good discussion. I met Bart Belon many years ago. He spoke about breeding dogs to us informally. He said he did not care much about what a female had accomplished. He did not look for titles or top training in the brood bitch. He said that the female had to come from strong male lines. He also said papers were for wiping one's own behind with. He told us that his own dog [ 18 years ago] had no papers but better than papers, he had worked the father, the father's sire and the mother sire and knew many generations and so on.  It is easier to do that in Antwerp than anywhere in the USA. But we must try to better the breed. The best working line breeders is a lofty motivation for this thread. It has promoted a lot a thought , on what takes place for a breeding. Anarchy does not work, Bart B without the use of papers on dogs was connected to top trainers and breeders to keep his desire for owning a top dog going forward. He knew 4 or 5 generations behind his dog. We should all stay that long in the breed and keep working at a better GSD.

I started studying pedigrees of APBT's in the early 80' for breeding purposes and after great luck in the weight pull circut, and poor luck in protection dogs,  I decided to use that in finding the type of GSD I wanted. After Pirry died I did not look at a pedigree until 2009. Him and a dog named Hitler were every thing I wanted in a dog. I was heart broken. By then I had to start at the back of the 5 sometimes 6 gen ped and look forward. lol

Let me try to put this in perspective. I have seen the weakening of hardness and aggression in GSD in the last 25 years. Why? To make the easier to train, better precision for the sport, safer and less lawsuits. Most breeders do not breed for the standard, they breed for what the buyers want. Most can not better the breed for free. They have to sell puppies and or dogs to support this dog habat. So my desire is to bring hardness and aggression back in the breed for those that want that. We will always have GSD's that are junk on either side of the middle of the breed. But if most of the dogs are supper aggressive we will need some supper friendly dogs to bring into the gene pool some moderation in the breed. Same with too soft, we will have to have supper hard and aggressive to build it back up. We do not need the GSD to be man killers any more the we need them to be slugs. The GSD is a moderate breed not an extreme breed  and if we want it to me moderate we will have to have some extreme on both sides.

I would like to thank everyone for the kind responses and input.  Many of the threads have been rude and aggressive. This has truly been one of the great ones.  PM that I have recieved have been just as good.

Thank You Paul,

Very well said, I agree with your thinking and good narration of your means to produce Better GSD's.  I also
want to commend all others that understood and displayed Respect , which  should be the Norm on these Forums.  Even if one doesn't agree
or agree's to disagree's,  it can be done with compassion and Respect.  By continuing to listen-share  and be open to new ideas One can
Continue to Learn a lifetime.  I truly hope that we can better the breed we all agree to Love, for those in the Future. As Captain Max Stephanitz
asked all of us to do so many years ago.

Kindest Regards,
