Leather may be hard on hand  at first, but patient person will find out  after short  time of use of it, that after a while it has better-natural feel to it and get's better with time. After a while leather leash is like a  good old friend.
When leather gets old you can tell and can retire  it . You can tell that the leather leash is old  by miniature cracks when you bend the leather hard and look .where webbing will look OK until it brakes Also I have seen where webbing one strain loose and it got pulled on it and it unweave it self in one moment and  dog got lose.  Also webbing burns when it runs through your hand where leather is more hand friendly.
But to each his/her own.......

If you go into the trouble to make your own leather leash, then use harness leather and not a latigo regardless how fancy it is. Latigo often bleeds the dye when wet and it is not as strong and harness leather.  There are other very strong leathers like chrome tanned leather but even so they have superior strength, they do not have the look ( it is bluish grey) and  feeling of the hand rubbed Heramman oak  harness leather which is very strong and natural looking and ready to buy in form of split reins.Hand Rubbed Split Reins
If you want really thin 1/4 inch or thinner and very strong leash then you should go with chrome tanned leather. But you will probably need to buy whole hide and work from there. as it is shown on the video which someone posted above. Braiding Video.......actual braiding portion starts at about 1 minute into the video.

Then we have also super strong and durable buffalo and kangaroo leather and so on.....
