A one point seven kiloton atomic bomb was detonated fifty five years ago today over the Nevada desert. Five volunteers stood directly under under the blast as part of propaganda campaign by USGov. Story was on the news prog this morning and when they mentioned schools doing "duck and cover" drills, it brought back a lot of memories of those days. Just wonder what any body else's experiences were during that tumultuous era and also during the Missle Crises. Did ya'll have black-out air raid drills? I was in Miami, Fl and we had drills once a week. I heard a jet over head break the sound barrier while walking home from school one day, and I literally HIT the DIRT and covered my head! The brain washing was very effective! LOL . Wasn't funny at the time, tho...

NPR did a piece on this a few days ago complete with a video of the guys standing there during the detonation...crazy stuff.

They showed the video this morning, too. The man shooting the film was interviewed , he is eighty eight years old and said all he had for protection was a base ball cap! Unreal!!

BTW, you can avoid the missing topic error message if you edit the topic of your original post and remove the quotation marks. It's a quirk in the software.

So if any one tries to post on this thread, you have to put topic title in Topic slot. What a pain.

gg, that film is what they actually used in school since '58 or '59 if I remember right. Also reel to reels of a-bombs detonating, it was constant, every week. I don't think education system could get away with it nowadays because of the neg psychological impact on the kids. I used to have nightmares about being in a war when I was a kid. The film is hilarious in today's context. Thanks for posting it.
