This picture was taken just a few miles down the road from where I live. Reminds me of an old Alfred Hitchcock movie. Think I should be boarding up my windows?

Instead of flock, is the proper term a kettle of eagles?

by beetree on 17 February 2012 - 13:02

I know it is a murder of crows.... (I've always liked that one, lol)

How about a slaughter of eagles?

When I first moved to Southern Ontario, Canada from British Columbia, one day I was walking down the road and saw this huge flock of 'eagles' soaring above.  Circling, circling.  I thought it was pretty magical and began telling friends about this.  I'd never heard of eagles flying together.

Well, I was eventually disappointed to find out that what I was looking at were Turkey Buzzards.  Up close, they really don't look magestic whatsoever.

Ok, I just looked it up, the proper term for a group of eagles is a convocation of eagles!

LOL wouldn't Baby Eagle just love that!!

Where the heck has Baby Eagle been? They gave up the tents for the winter, didn't they? What am I worried about.... she'd be the replacement for "Survivor Man", in an instant!

Eagles Gather.......:)

by triodegirl on 18 February 2012 - 04:02

I didn't take the picture, a friend of mine did. He said he counted 53 Eagles and not all of them are in the picture. I think you are right Moons. Eagles gather. They usually don't come in so close to town. These were about 10 minutes outside of town in a marshy area, probably looking for food.

Check out this video on the local news. Same thing happened last year near a boat landing in the area. Nearly 50 Bald Eagles were counted.

triodegirl,
not sure where you live but I have seen Eagles gather like this up through north eastern Illinois on my way to Wisconsin a couple of times.
They gather in winter where food is abundant, usually water fowl in winter though they still fish.
They seem to socialize and often appear to play when not stealing another's food, a real treat to watch them in flight doing acrobatics.

Glacier Park is another place where I know they gather in great numbers in winter.

We have a few here on the Ohio river but nothing like this, a couple do stay here year round.

They do not flock together, they gather, and only for a short time.
Magnificent birds.

Moons.

P.S.
I think I saw BabyEagle on TV with Ron Paul....:)
