Sunsilver you have to look at other carriers who do not go back through Avon Prince. The one common denominator is that all of the carriers go back to Ingosohn of Errol who was born and bred in Germany from all German Lines. The time frame for this is important because Avon Prince was born in 1948 and his sire, Arno of Saba was born in 1945 and sired by Ingosohn of Errol around 1942. Arno was widely used in his day thus passing epilepsy by a different female route.

When epilepsy was first found breeders took the view that it was case that it could not happen to me. The Kennel Club was not aware of the consequences that the disease would bring. Incest breeding and close inbreeding was permitted, more so in other breeds.

Just to let you all know that our beloved Logan had an Idiopathic Epilepsy Status Epilepticus event and he never regained consciousness. His heart stopped as the emergency vet inserted a cannula in his leg.

I am devastated and I will try to bring Epilepsy research and knowledge to the fore.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Can you post the dog's pedigree?

RIP and run free Logan .
Maybe it's the wrong time to ask , but I too would like to see his pedigree. I see no point in discussing epilepsy or any other health condition, if we don't know which lines are affected. We're all aware of the 'old ' affected lines but I doubt many are aware of the lines that are still affected now ! They don't all go back to the 'old' lines .

And it's not just purebred dogs, either. The only dog I've personally known to die from a seizure was a medium sized mutt that belonged to the guy who owned the stable where I used to ride. :'( He gave him a horse-sized dose of IV valium, but just could not get the seizure to stop. :'(

(Many horse people learn how to give IV tranquilizers - it's not unusual. )

Hi guys. Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Logan is on the database as Clynalwin’s Opus. His sire and dam pedigrees were submitted to Chris Hazell at the GSD Breed Council before mating by the breeder, to ensure nothing hidden in either line.

Definitely not seeing any red flags there. No excessive line breeding, and as far as I know, no lines to known fitters.

So sorry for your loss! :'(

Thank you for posting Logan's pedigree. Looking at it , nothing jumps out but if you go back far enough it leads to Druidswood Consort and then on to Avon Prince. A long long way back I know , but still there. I so wish that we had more information on 'today's ' dogs. We can check pedigrees to our heart's content, but can only base our findings on the information available , made public. So sorry Marilyn and so sorry for Logan.

Brady Bee, wow! I couldn't find any lines that didn't go to German showlines!

Nice bit of detective work! And I know German show lines aren't all clear of the disease either, as Mackenzie pointed out.

Still, it's disheartening to show the disease still popping up with Avon Prince being so far back, and without the intensive line breeding on the Alsatian lines present in so many other fitters. :(
