Prager

by Prager on 27 August 2018 - 17:08

@ jillmissal . When I travel for 2 days I do not feed at all. Fasting is a normal part of the canine cycle. if I travel longer i stop in grocery store along my way and buy meat. When hiking in desert or mountains for few days I make my own jerky vacuum sealed in plastic. Dogs have a backpack and carry their own.

Jillmissil: . It's really hard to go wrong with dog food despite the endless discussions about it.

Me: As we say in the south when you've made a huge blunder : you ain't from around here are ya?

In other words, you haven't had dogs very long, have you?

by joanro on 27 August 2018 - 20:08

Prager, I hope you fast along with your dog. If they had a choice like you have, I bet they would not go hungry.

Joan, no need to get snotty. I've had dogs for 45 years. Fed them everything under the sun except what happens to be trendy. My longest-lived dog was on Purina his whole life. His sister as well, they both lived to 17. I'm not gonna get worked up about dog food. I feed them what I feel like feeding them and my dogs all do great. All the hype and hysteria is just nonsense. But OK. Kibble is poison, whatever.

by joanro on 28 August 2018 - 11:08

Nonesense to you maybe.
What did you do with your dogs? What type work did they do? Looks like youre the one getting snotty.

Not from around here implies you don't know what you're talking about....limited. so I'll stick with that.

As for trendy, that's for folks who " ain't from around here". BTW, can't get any more ''trendy " than "TOTW" (for crying out loud, you even used it's acronym. Its a crapy product....clue is the hype advertising and pictures on the bag!)

If you are luckiest enough to feed dogs anything well great. I prefer to use a referred and utilized dog food where you can see the proof; good coats, good energy, firm stool, in general a healthy looking and feeling dog. I have seen dogs that have been fed trendy in fact I turned one around but it took about 5 years of bad feeding and took me about a year to turn him around also cost him his kidneys, so I like to see something that has worked for dogs; the proof is in the pudding so to speak. Great days to all. Nan

"What did you do with your dogs? What type work did they do?"

Everything under the sun from dog sledding to house pet to SAR to conformation show to detection to OB. My dogs have always looked amazing. Rarely had health issues that weren't solidly genetic. Only lost one dog young, ever. I'm just not one prone to hysterics about nutrition in any form - and I'm a former bodybuilder with a lot of experience in how foods affect a body.

Whether a dog food is bad or not based on an acronym for the name of the food...lol, I'll just leave that alone.

"I prefer to use a referred and utilized dog food where you can see the proof; good coats, good energy, firm stool, in general a healthy looking and feeling dog."

Sure but the sheer number of foods that fit that bill are legion. Just pick one, it's hard to go wrong really.

Jillmissal: thanks for response, I changed to Victor. Fish for now and may go to Nutra Pro and mix with fish next bag. Agree too da_ _ many but do have some concerns with quality. In Victor dog food case I will save quite a bit of $$. So will see in the next few months what my guys look like and if I need to add any oils or ??

My gsd is my service dog and the aussie boy hubs shows in conformation. Thanks again, Nan

@nans - awesome, probably a good call. The SUPER expensive foods are just ridiculous! I can't remember what food I was feeding a while back but the price kept going up into the $90/bag range and I just couldn't justify that. That's when I switched to TOTW and had no problems. Good luck!
