Now, as a German, I am curious.
Where in Germany ( clubs/towns ) have you been 30 years ago, and with whom did you train for how long?
Whom do you consider "the best trainers" during that time?
Did we meet eventually? There were not many Americans around in the eighties.

You and me both. I would really like to know where you went because we've had quite a few American guests but I can count them on 10 Fingers and all of them are very well known in the GSD world.

by duke1965 on 18 July 2016 - 18:07

centurion might be right, possesivenessmight be the biggest problem, that is why I train out on ball in low(er) drive and later on , on end of biting session, when he is empty and doesnot have much juice left

it would be stupid macho stuff to start to fight such dog when high in drive, pumped up and frsh

another factor that doesnot help is his weight and size obviously

by Centurian on 18 July 2016 - 20:07

Susie , I don't feel right not addressing your question .
No I don't think we met , and I prefer to be a nobody, a no one in the GS World. I don't want fame or money . I am that way in my own profession too. I wrote a bit of a synopsis who I trained with in USA , other countries , their qualifications, but I decided to delete it. Because to me it is not important , nor relevant. I rather be a nobody , even in my profession I never ever wanted notoriety. Additionally I would never post anyone's name , not even an enemy , on the internet , especially without permission.
I want you thread readers , to go through channels with ' people in the know' in your Country , if you are interested and Find the true state of the GS in all respects. health , Structure , Genetic / Behavioral Characteristics , Mentality , [ to me a big one here]. But I forewarn you , you really have to know people and have their trust because most often the average person will never ever hear , what could be heard. To you - What matters is the truth .
This is a great web site , but i tell you with certainty , on the Internet as a whole , you will never ever see certain words ever written about the GS - you just won't.There are words shun even in private about the GS , never ever to be brought up in discussion ! I end this notion here- It's not for me to be debating about.
I don't ask anyone to believe what i write. As a matter of fact , in all subjects , I advice my very best friends to have their own thoughts about whatever is said . Seek for yourselves the truth , test the words to see what is true or not and think for yourself unless you get lead astray. [ Not just about the GS but every topic in your life] .My words aren't important. What do you think-that is what is important. What you do , who you train with-0 that is important. My history doesn't help you. This is what i would tell my son or daughter. Telling you where in Germany , who I know , who I trained with from Belgium , France USA , Germany will not help you in any matter. Not one bit. But Susie I would be more than happy to answer any question about dog training itself , if you choose to ask . That i would not withhold from you. Thanks for your question in any event.

Thank you for your acknowledgement of my post. I am hopeful to you Duke [ with sincerity written ].
20 years ago an aquaintance came to me . He had an imported Malinois from hard Belgium lines. His problem the dog wouldn't out. Great obedience and protection foundation. then he asks my hep. the dog would't out. he said " i taught him and out, I use a ball he will out. I do the 2 ball thing , and he will out. The sleeve I have been trying months and no matter what i do I can't get him to out. He will not budge once on the sleeve, the bite stays solid , does not faulter or tire . OH , I said. let's see. OB impeccable on the sleeve. once on , he would never come off. Not in reference to this dog in the video , but the fellow did not recognize the genetic origin , YES HE LOOKED OK , LOOKED NORMAL IN THE WORK . What i am trying IN GENERAL for viewers to understand is that not everything in canines is as it SEEMS to be. LOOKS can be deceiving. Not specific about this dog . Yes we see different views on this thread and I think that is OK , a good conversation it is. But i want people to learn something in the general , "Not every thing is as it seems to be with canine behavior".

As if there was a conspiracy out there to cloud the truth about the German Shepherd Dog. LOL

by Centurian on 18 July 2016 - 22:07

No there is no conspiracy , but dogs are not perfect. breeding is not perfect. The fact of the matter is one wrong word written or spoken , a kennel , even those with generations of existence can be ruined in a blink of an eye. Any one that is in the know has heard stories that they would never ever repeat , In USA , Germany and any other country . I tell you without any motivation , that anyone , anyone that tell you otherwise is lying and anyone that denies this is a fool. The fact of the matter is that there is a lot of reputation and money , $$ millions involved and at stake. many livelihoods based on the GS. So common sense Baer. and the country you are in, I don't know it , it is no different as mine. People are people . Now I pose this to you . Health issues , form where did they come , and if all the kennels have no problem , then why is there health issues rampant SL AND WL in cureent GS ? . If everybody was on the up and up , then how could a breed that thrived in the 70's , 60's and 50' be so plagued with health issues. Conspiracy , no ...admittance or truthfulness , the same - NO.

I really was interested, and I guess, Barenfang, too.
I´d simply like to know where you have been in Germany, and who "influenced/impressed" you.
The eighties have been a major time of change in German dogsport, there have been very different training methods in different areas during that time.
I guess after 30 years no good trainer/club/town would mind to be mentioned here.
I don´t need to know your name, I do use an alias, too, no problem.
It´s just about your "roots".
We never met? How do you know for sure?

LOL "can be ruined within a blink of an eye." Give me a break. No they can't.
There is absolutely nothing that any of the old kennels hasn't had. And especially in the US people are not even afraid to put directions on their website on how to tape ears. Now back then, 30 years ago, that's something that could have "ruined" someones name but everyone knows that no breeder has perfect dogs.

We all know:

There is HD
There is ED
Soft ears exist
Cancer happens
Cauda Equina is nothing new these days
DM does exist, and you can breed with Carriers
Transparency is a better policy than hiding the facts
Even the best pedigree can produce shitters
EPI is real
Perinual Fistulas is not uncommon either

I am more weary of a breeder that tells me he's never had ANYTHING wrong with his dogs, rather than a breeder that's brutally honest with himself and his dogs.

And yes, I was around 30 years ago, I know the game. 30 years ago things were cloaked and I actually went through quite a culture shock coming over here and realizing how much more open and honest breeders are in the US about their dogs and how openly things are talked about. Back in Germany people told you face to face but no one would have put it out on the internet as openly as breeders in the US did it.
I had never even heard of Perianal Fistula before I came over. Little did I know that I'd end up with a dog that would have them myself.

I was shocked seeing instructions on how to glue and tape ears on very well respected breeders websites. When you produced a dog with soft ears that needed to be taped, you stayed home, period. You never told anyone... in this time and age, with the internet, you can't hide shit anymore. People are much more open about it. Heck, I put it out there that one of my females ended up with ED. I have nothing to hide, if there is one thing I've learned from my father it's: Honesty is the best course of direction. Never lie about your dogs, there is no shame in admitting when you produced undesirable traits because EVERY BREEDER HAS TO COOK WITH WATER! Every breeder faces the same issues and even the best breeders out there produce undesirable dogs.

With all the information out there, people are not as dumb and ignorant anymore. They ask questions. And offense is the best defense. When I ask you about your dogs, I expect the strength and weaknesses. I'm sick of people pretending their dogs have no issues whatsoever. Give me a break. You think we are all that ignorant? You think it'll ruin breeders? What will ruin breeders is not being truthful and trying to hide the fact that we all know the fricking game!

And people will always talk shit about your dogs. Especially when envy is involved. Our best producing male was shunned in his own region for being to extreme. 30 years later everyone wants him in his pedigree. I was told he was used for hog hunting (LOL) and I was like "Really? You know more than I know and I grew up with this dog."

I was told by someone that he was told by a friend one of our best producing females was a defensive shitters... really? That's why she's produced dogs that went into the history of the breed and people are intentionally seeking out these dogs.

Kennels that are well established and known for producing certain traits cannot be ruined, no matter how much people are trying. And people will try to discredit certain dogs. If the dog was imported, people will try to say that the handler only made it that far because the dog was already trained. Even though we all know that just because you import a great dog, doesn't mean you'll make it onto the world team. It takes a certain type of handler that can take a strong dog and continue the route of success.

So please... yeah...

What health issues are "rampant" in the breed?
