GSDNewbie

by GSDNewbie on 05 June 2013 - 16:06

I have show lines, and I do not think she is skinny. I see a tuck up, not skinny. She is not in a stack, so even that could be misleading. I also always hear in the showlines everyone gearing for the shows saying "nope, make them skinnier " when the dog in front of me is really not heavy, so I am very confused by the working line people always talking about show lines being too heavy.  The mature dogs competeing for VA are full bodied dogs of later age that have reached full potential and are campeigning for breeding that have substance and coat, they are not fat, except for a few that see too much kennel loungeing time. On the whole, I see to many dogs that are "skinny" and not athletic lean IMO in the ring. They make them look a healthy weight, but they do not have any muscle tone at all and I have seen plenty of working lines that to me also look skinny in the same way. The dog in photo looks healthy and fit, not lean due to lack of groceries. To my horror, I see too many gsds of every line that just do not get enough excersize and lack of calories to make them look fit does not fool me. My 3 year old carries no weight, when we are doing service work pet people comment he is skinny, but to me he just looks healthy and fit. My show line is active all day with several outings to burn energy. He is an athlete with an athletes' muscle and leaness. He is fit and he weighs 83 pounds and does not look it. He is not as heavy in bone as I would have liked as my other male is. My other male is also not fat, but does have much more coat as well as much heavier bone, mature body and he looks overweight compared to my younger male. My older male is same height as my younger and is 85 pounds of fit to go with my younger males weight of 83 pounds of fit and one looks much heavier than the other until you actually put your hands on them. Looks can be deceiveing if you do not know the dogs or ever seen them in person even. How many of you are judgeing all the show lines weight here have seen multiple shows, different regions and of different caliberes and not just photos posted on line to come up with the conclussion to call show lines fat?

I take great pride in all of my dogs being fit and of proper weight. This includes healthy enough to be active even in retirement age 11 for my show lines. No kennel/ sofa loungeing soft, fat show line gsds in this home.  Your dog looks fit and healthy and happily working!! I love her pigment and coloring as well as her expression. I love and apreciate gsds, line type does not exist for me when it comes to enjoying a good dog. I would appreciate the same care from people in not making generalized comments about show lines in return for my support and love of dogs that are not show line.

Gsdnewbie,, look at breeds like labs in the conformation ring...now they are what I call fat. Bulldogs...fat....mastiffs..fat. Bull terriers..fat. Jenni isn't talking about this dog being made fat to show, and I was talking in general terms of dogs in conformation shows being fat to obese. Most people who have been to AKC shows, anyway, can see that the GSDs aren't overweight. Nobody is knocking your dogs or this dog on the thread either, for that matter.

First several posts was about her in the UKC conformation ring and her competition...... show lines and talk of a gsd conformation show. What conclusion does that bring reading this thread when show lines are called fat?

Show dogs, not "show lines". Don't be confused, nobody is knocking your dogs. I said in my post " .......in the world of show DOGS".

She looks GREAT! I do agree with Jenn though. Can't really speak to the UKC ring, but the SV ring they usually put FAT dogs last. Some judges are more sensitive to that than others though, and some like a little more fat on the males. Where I agree with Jenn is, is that with the hip bones protruding, it accentuates her short croup. With a little more fat to cover it you can help it look better. That's all... lol
I hope to have some club photos of Dolce on Saturday.... we'll see....

Newbie...read what was read. SHOW RING, not SHOW LINES. Good grief...seeing insults where there are none. No one is insulting anyone, and show lines hadn't even crossed my mind. Show RING, show RING...look at horses, halter showing....same thing. Roll eyes

Have I had my hands on Rory lately to say she's thin? No. But I certainly know her lines and her littermates and think, knowing them like I do, that saying she could use 5lbs to SHOW BETTER is a fair thing to say. Thanks, Debby, for putting it succinctly. Her croup is particularly where more weight would make her look 10x better. She's fine now- to make her  as aesthetically pleasing as possible to the MAJORITY, since we will not know the particular judge's personal preference,  I say add 5lbs. Working dog people like her; pet people would likely call AC. LOL. So, let's compromise just a hair to give her the best shot in the ring. That's all..........

Debby, now you've basically committed to posting pics Saturday.......Shades Smile

Here is the photo I am judging by; I can count ribs and know that not everyone finds this as aesthetically appealing as many of us do, so in the interest of getting her some competition wins, looking around at the general population of dogs in conformation rings, my opinion is 5lbs would help her place higher. I think she's nice enough to do well- not VA well, but well enough. JMO.  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=1855943-daenerys-vom-eisenherz

LadyFrost:  I have no idea how she's kept the coat she has.  xD   My other dogs have all blown their coats.  She's shed a bit, but overall kept her coat.  I'm not complaining though!  I know it'll happen eventually.  I'm in Texas, so I'm sure the temperature will get into the 100's sometime this month.  That'll probably do it.

Jenni:  I completely agree. One of the judges commented on how she looked like she needed more groceries.  She'll have a few more pounds put on before the end of next month and it will smooth out her lines.  I'm going to try to get to training a little bit early tomorrow and get an updated stack of her.  The one on her pedigree page is from when she was about 7 or 7 1/2 months old.

I know the pic is a few months old; I think she's in comparable condition (and that's not a bad thing!!) now and the fact that she wasn't stacked was brought into it.  So glad you saw my comment for what it was- a "maybe this would help her place higher" and not a "your dog is too skinny." Teeth Smile

I'm glad she's doing so well and you're enjoying her; she had big paw prints to fill. Fingers crossed she is all you'd hoped when it's time to consider breeding.

nice looking dog. congrats halix and jenn. the only place a "fat" dog might get by is an AKC all breed ring. Specialties and SV, they will fall to the back of the line pretty quick.

the dog looks in good weight to me, maybe a little leggy or stagey due to young age, but they all go through that.

jmo,
Rik
