There is a good reason for putting, and using a leash on a dog ;-)
Sounds like Gunther is refraining from being in control when strangers approach, and his avoidance behavior of running away from the Jeep have been halted by the "magical leash" :-)

Sure your Trainer is right about Gunther's intelligence

most work !! Great to hear things have improved and
you feel better about where you are going with him;
