" ...I raised the dog from a pup to a HOT V rated SchH3 KKL1a."

Does this dog have a name and could you scan and post his score book?  I'm having a hard time finding this information and inexperienced people like me always love to see the high 90's scores that experienced trainers like yourself achieve in all three phases.  Someone as experienced and accomplished as you must have lots of dogs he's titled; who are some of the others?

Texasdeb, I assume by your handle you are in Texas. If so what location ? I know a trainer in southern Oklahoma, between OK City and Dallas that is more than qualified to help you with him regardless of how bad he is. I know they are all over Texas as well but others there would know better than me.
PM me if you are in Northern Texas.

Vonisengard, you are NOT the sort of pet trainer I'm talking about!  Teeth Smile   I'm talking about the sort that thinks any sort of negative correction is animal cruelty. Of course, you never see them working with a dog like Gunther, who would probably last only 5 minutes in their class, before being kicked out for aggressive behaviour!

I must have hit the submit button accidentally. Since I have this blank space with my name on it, I might as well put something in it.

Hi everyone: Am sorry to have appeared to disappear. I do have MS and sometimes when it "flares" I am a bit indisposed :) I have also been talking with a variety of trainers and will give you all an update. First, though, I want to thank all of you for the input I have received. You will never know how helpful y'all have been, even those whose advice to did (or will not) work for me were helpful in helping me see what was not right for my dog.
Although my screenname is Texasdeb (I am a native of TX) I moved last year and am about 25 miles north of New Orleans.  Gunther has not been as socialized as I would like because of a number of things. First, I cannot figure out how to get hum in my car, only my husband's van. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and for reasons I cannot understand Gunther almost runs away when we head toward the Jeep, but will climb right into the van. How can I help him? Next issue (y'all will be busy,we have LOTS of issues) he came to me at 5 months (DOB 12/31/2011). At that time I already had 2 Great Danes age 2 yrs, one deaf. He is very attached to my male dane, and when I try to leave the house with Gunther the dane tries to  jump the fence to follow. I cannot handle both at once on leash. when I take Gunther my spouse stays home to "babysit". Gunther has been in public (PetSmart store) a few times & has shown none of this behavior there. The only thing he has done is physically place himself beyween me and the person I am talking to if they get to close. He has allowed people to pet him, touch him, he seems calm & relaxed, he just doesn't want them to close to me. Now, at night, he sleeps at my bedside. Since I have other health issues in addition to MS, he has awakened me several times in the night when my breathing has been "off". Somehow, he seems to know when I am having a bad night. He greets everyone in the family really nicely, but rarely follows direction from anyone but me. He stays at my feet, to the point of moving when I move (i.e. if I go in the bathroom he will lay down at the door. If I go in the kitchen he will go in and lay down. When I leave he leaves) Hubby says when he is outside and I am inside, anyone who starts to come into the house nearly gets bowled over by Gunther, who pushes his way in and makes  a beeline for me. Gunther then will do that "doggie cry/whine" and nuzzle me and lay down on my feet. Am still looking for and talking to trainers to get him started, and hope this info gives y'all a better pic of my boy. Also, I would like to PM but am unsure of how, as I am technologically challenged. . Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from all of you

Agree with the others, get to a trainer ASAP.  They will be your best option to teach you how to work with Gunther.  From your last post, he sounds like a great asset to you, just that he decides when it is ok to protect (IMO, this is never a good thing).

In the mean time, crating will probably be your best option.  This protects everyone around you.  You decide when he comes out.  If you want him to be beside you, have him on a leash.  This way you can get control quickly if needed.

Good luck.

Dogs do what is good for dog [ itself]. Outside of the occasional ''Lassie'' moment, when our dogs do something totally spiritual, it is very easy to understand why a dog behaves the way it does. The story of the dog running away from owner when it does not want to get into the jeep is what I wrote about a few days ago. When a dog runs away from the owner it is taking charge of the situation. I would hazzard a bet there are many such episodes if the handler gets very honest with herself and stops trying to reason why the dog does what it does and gets pro-active. Most aggressive behavior is fueled by avoidence of a situation the dog does not like.  Find a trainer!

Just click on the screen name of the member you want to PM and follow the prompts. Good luck. It sounds to me as if you are going to need a trainer who will come to your home.

stay away from ''Pet Smart'' for dog training information. the place was mis-named.
