You could consider searching the archives of the Yahoo K9 Nutrition group about grinders; this is a topic that comes up fairly often.

There are many models of raw feeding- many of my raw feeding friends feed a ground bone source. One thing I noticed when I fed 50/50 ground chicken to Senta as her bone source is that her teeth yellowed very quickly even though she received large pieces of red meat. For Bosco, his metabolism burns through ground food very quickly and he gets the yellow bile pukes by noon. Perhaps this is just specific to my GSDs. Bosco also really eats with gusto (a gulper) so I tend to feed very large pieces to slow him down. Here's a completely gratuitous picture of him at ~4 months eating a slab of goat ribs.

I don't feed turkey drumsticks either (many raw feeders do) but I find the bones can splinter into large shards and this makes me feel uncomfortable. Martin cuts the meat off of the bone and so I use drumsticks as one of my cheap muscle meat sources (it takes him about 3.5 minutes per 1.25 lb drumstick but he's really good with a cleaver ...LOL).

Laura,  thx for sharing your pic's of Bosco, he is really handsome.  also thx for heads up on the Turkey meat to cut off the drumstick, I can get those really cheap at times and will do so and also cut off the bone.

To the poster;  I hope we have answered your questions,  Great days everyone,  Nan

PS:  Laura has your boy outgrown some of his sensitivities feeding him raw?  Just curious.  Thx  Nan

If you're stuck on feeding raw........learn what a dog requires...... and feed exactly that.

Just throwing a bunch of beef necks or chicken backs is not a balanced diet.

Thanks for the input,,I have been tossing back and forth supplementing with raw for a while now. I researched commercial meat ginders in the past without much luck. Not too long ago I remember someone mentioning something about a meat/bone grinder.I thought it was someone here on the PDB..I might post a new thread..

I am interested in mixing the raw meat with a pre-made mix like Artisan/ Honest Kitchen with all the right ratios of vitamins and minerals. The holistic vet that has been seeing Prince supports feeding  kibble/raw combination. I asked him if he was concerned about the different digestion times and he said he did not believe there was sufficient support to cause a concern. ~~Thinking,,,If I was concerned I could seperate them am/pm//..

I am not comfortable only feeding a raw meat diet exclusivly..I think that in order for a diet to be complete you must incorporate vit/min/fruit/veggi's...and kibble to cover all the bases ~~thats just meRed Smile,,,It helps me sleep better at night...

I live in a very rural community of farmers and have many types of organic meat available for less then what most pay at the grocery store and I should probably be taking advantage of it..

thanks
Deanna..

I buy a grass finished dry aged quarter beef twice a year to keep the chemicals out of the food.  My family and the dogs eat the beef but the GSD's also get BB Wilderness and Earthborn. My small house dog also gets Honest Kitchen Zeal due to his allergies. My older dogs get beef and Honest Kitchen Keen to help the issues of older dogs. I don't feed bones to my pets, not that it's bad but I chose not to do it. I think Honest Kitchen is the best food for pets but it will run into big money if your feeding more than a few. The best way I've found to feed raw was to buy beef  off a organtic farm in bulk.  Also,  for health I give my dogs only berkey filtered water with the fluoride filters added. Dogs can taste water and they love pure water over tap water all the time. It's the chemicals in the food that kill our pets and give us cancer. If I could all my dogs would be on Honest Kitchen and organtic raw beef.

La Junta GSD - I do not feed any beef bones to my dogs because I find them too hard for them to consume in a meal.  They do get knuckle bones for recreational chewing.  As far as what variety they get?  Chicken, turkey, duck, rabbit, beef, lamb, goat, llama, deer, fish, pork - I try to get as much variety in their diet as I can.  That's what makes for a balanced diet - a good variety of foods.
