Not sure I understand either, but since I usualy wake up with nothing on my mind, here goes. If a dog is given a choice between a human and the wild, he will happily choose the human. Not so with the elephant.

As far as dogs for a specific job, a soldier whose life depends on the ability of his dog's detection is going to choose the dog with the best ability. We can all sit around and discuss what should be. But if my life is on the line, I'm not going to pass over the dog with a great ability to do the job at hand for a lesser ability at that job, but maybe a better all around dog.

Not sure how much sense that makes, so I'm also headed for the coffee.

Since we brought up Eden... im assuming yiu take a biblical stance on things. Donkeys, oxen, and even dogs are mentioned throughout the bible and mostly mentioned in passing. But it is said that oxen were used to plow (not to much fun for the oxen) donkeys horses and mules for riding on. Only dif I see with dogs is that they enjoy their work and are rewarded for having fun with their owners. So to contemplate the fact of over stepping ohr bounds as overseers of the k9 world is a bit far fetched (pun intended) their here to serve us..we're here to care for them. Now imo I think dressing up and treating a dog as an equal to us is over stepping boundries lol...but trIning them to use the skills they have already (ingrained in their dna from the begining) is awesome!

Supakamario....what have you done with your dogs to have this POV.  You use the term "make"....I never feel like I'm making my dog do anything!

Have you ever heard a good working dog scream in utter excitement as you turn the corner to the training field?

Have you ever seen the look in a police/Protection dogs eyes as they look at a decoy and drool?

If you have a dog lacking the proper drives for the breed you might feel like you're "making" them work....but if you have a GSD with the right drives and a good training program, taking them to work/training feels like a parent taking their kid to Disney World.

I've worked a lot with horses, which are far from the 'dumb animals' some people think they are. The good ones...the ones people tend to select to breed...WANT to work!

I used to ride a retired show jumper, who would walk beside me like a dog on a leash as I headed for the arena. (I sometimes had to restrain him from getting ahead of me!)  My own horse would jump fences at liberty, just for the fun of it. It's quite common for horses who are good at jumping to do that. Sometimes keeping them in their own pasture can be a bit of a problem, unless they are with other horses. Then the herd instinct kicks in. Until feeding time....

I used to ride a thoroughbred/quarterhorse cross that would jump the 4'  gate if you didn't open it quickly enough when bringing the horses in from pasture at feeding time! She was a real hoot to ride, and a VERY talented jumper!

Historically, the horses and animals that want to work in the service of man were the ones that were kept and trained for a specific job. The rest wound up at the slaughterhouse.

Good post GSDfan!

My dog's breeder does SAR with her dogs. The dog does not think it's working, the dog thinks it's looking for the person who's hiding with it's favourite TUG TOY, which it gets to play with as a reward for finding the person. It's a game to them, and they love it!

Even with my pup, her favourite toy is her puppy Kong and I hide it all over and tell her to "show me". She turns things upside down lookign for it and when she finds it, she lights right up and we play a game of fetch.

Dogs don't begrudge 'work' the way we do. :D Work is really play time for them, it's a game. A well bred GSD won't be happy without having a 'job' to do. They are genetically programmed to be doing something, you just have to find what things they take to naturally and develop it. It's not about making them do something, it's about developing the things they naturally want to do.
