Great replies - thanks to all.

We got the GSD when she was 2yo so missed out on some training that could have been done much earlier, but she had some basic obedience and was just a great girl.

As I'm home with everyone, I spend quite a bit of time (all day, really) with the dogs.  My lab likes to laze around more as she gets older, but when she was younger, she was content to just be where I was - playtime was important, but if she did nothing else other than sit and be rubbed on she was a happy camper.  The GSD is different.  I can just see that she wants to be doing something - she follows me around all day and 'helps' with whatever I'm doing, which is really just accompanying me, lol, but she seems to like it.  Any time I say "time for..." or "let's go do....", she's up and at the ready.  If she hears something and barks, we always acknowledge/praise and go with her to see what it was.  She's really good about settling down after we check things out, but we discovered that if we just told her it was OK and didn't "go see", she'd be on edge until we did.  She seems pleased when she's ascertained that nothing is amiss and everything is as it should be.

I really like the idea of a backpack and I'm certain she could learn to carry things.  I think I'll work with her on that and see if I can teach her to do it.  You've all had great ideas and I thank you.

Be careful what you wish for, mirasmom!  I have always said that if GSDs had opposable thumbs they would take over the world!
