It may be cute for that insecurity to make you feel needed but if you baby it in a gsd you will have major issues later.

by SassyJSD on 04 November 2012 - 07:11

I tried to get white stone to call/e-mail me to discuss early training for possible service dog but never got a response.  Called and left a phone message and got the same lack of response.  Unless you send a deposit, your e-mails/calls are ignored.  That is poor business management.  I was the driver to pick up the puppy.  Had some nerve racking hours until we decided to call the Attorney General's office and they advised us to call the police if necessary when we got to the kennel.  Was relieved when we were graciously received when we arrived around 9 pm.  Puppy appeared healthy, and handled long (4+ hours) home very well.  While stopped for potty break, discovered that she already automatically sits when she come to you.  Praised her for that.  Also noticed that she would only go on the cement, not the grass.

To GSDNewbie:  Being a trainer of Service Dogs, I do not anticipate any future difficulties from the behavior discribed by Purity's handler.  She is getting proper socialization for her future job.  Thank you for your input.

So you were able to select and evaluate for a service dog out of a litter of pups that time of night? The breeder was definetly accomodating then to go through that kind of process so late. Especially since you claim poor customer service on the phone. I would not have expected them to open their doors for temperament testing and to do the evaluation after not arriving on time since that takes a good mount of time and disturbance to a litter so late in the evening disrupting them from their normal kennel schedule and the other dogs. The puppy was not just handed over? You would not have brought back a puppy just because there was a deposit on it and just "know" it will be a service dog?    I have a service dog  :) among my other gsds.  I am so glad that my latest dog suited well for service work since my medical problems have esculated since being in to gsds enough to need one. My other three gsds would not have been suitible just as any dog needs to be evaluated individually for this work and chosen for it and not just handed out.

ThereShe was picked out ahead of time from pictures. Most of the puppies were shipped out that day on planes all over the u. s. Callie did her own temperament testing at 6 weeks of age and said they all scored 2's and 3's their ideal temperament. Everybody apparently chose a puppy from pictures. I knew exactly which puppy I was getting before I got

there. I apologized repeatedly....we were there maybe 5 minutes. She went and got her for me immediately after we entered. I paid her, asked what temperament testing she did, and we left. Certainly it was not her fault we were delayed, and I am very pleased with the puppy.

Since the puppy was pre-purchased, I did not have the option of doing a thorough temperment test as I would have done if we were there to pick from a litter.  I have since done one and this puppy will be fantastic at her job.  I'm very pleased to know that you have a service dog.  So do I.  And I have helped numerous people train their own service dogs.  Some dogs I have helped pick out, but most not.  And as I previously stated, she is being properly socialized right now and has begun to be out in stores and restaurants.  She is doing well and enjoys her work so far.  Thank you for your interest.

Ahhhh I am one of those pesky service dog owner/handlers that believes in getting a program to certify handler/service dog teams and for anyone taking money or offering to train service dogs for people to have to go through a program to certify them as well. I know of one woman alone that a "service" dog attacked as she was helping the customer and had turned her back to get something for them and the dog lunged forward grabbing her upper leg and ripping the main artery almost causeing her death if a fireman had not been in the store and knew what to do. This is just one instance. This owner of course had to go to court where you have to end up proving who trained the dog and your medical needs that qualify you to have that dog. There is liability that people just do not consider when they put themselves in that position. I do not mind certification because 1. I know any scrunity of my medical issues will determine I need the dog, 2 My dog and I will pass any test given and I am confident on this or I do not derserve to have him in public and three my dog is trained to the absolute letter of the current standards in his tasks he preforms for me now. Did you know in some states if something happens and you end up having to defend your service dog in court if found to be not a true service dog it is a felony? If the dog does hurt someone in public you are found responsible as well as the trainer. I would never train someones dog for this even if I felt I was qualifed to train other people's dogs, because I would not have the insurance behind me that the training schools do in case later down the road the handler or dog screwed up then the trainer is called in on it. Just my two cents on it. I really wish the laws were better written, trainers actually had to prove their ability < at least some formal teaching and not just yeah I can teach you and your dog to do it to> in a legal standpoint to lessen the incidents,  and there was at least a test for handler/ service dog teams. I say no to just being able to buy a vest throw it on a dog, and call it a service dog. I used to be a SAR dog handler for years with both wilderness SARDOG, an Urban tracking hound, and a water SARDOG, I train in schutzhund. I have now had a public service dog for long term and I do not feel I should be out there training anyone's dog to do service dog work even though I know how to make a dog stable in public and useful.
off my soap box now, and I leave this thread

My parents purchased a white gsd from them and he is wonderful! I have three young kids and he is so gentle with them.  I have not really had interactions with the breeders myself but I absolutely love my parents' dog! We have actually reserved a puppy from a litter due this month for ourselves..a red and black gsd...not white.
