He looks better in those than he does in the 2nd pic you posted before.

i noticed that too...The "2nd" one was 8-28-12 and these new ones i just took today 9-2-12. Am i concerned over his weight for nothing then?

He could probably stand a little bit more weight, but only about 5 lbs or so--he DOES look better in these pictures than he did in the 8-28-2012 shot, so he probably is picking up some weight already.  Looking @ his bone structure, 75 to 80 pounds would probably be a good weight range for him--it's much better to keep the dog on the leaner side than heavier, as it's less stress on the dog's joints.

Your best gauge of whether a dog is too thin or too heavy is your hands--placing your hands along his side, you ought to be able to feel his ribs when you put a slight bit of pressure on them with your fingertips.  If you have to really press in to find them, the dog is a bit heavy; if you can't feel 'em at all even when you press real hard, the dog is flat-out fat; if you can feel them as soon as you put your hands on his sides, or you can see 'em before you even touch the dog, then the dog is too thin.

i was scribbling all the down while my almost 12m old was screaming for my note pad and drooling all over my pen and paper...so not every detail of each dog food bag was recorded....well the pet store offers:

Royal Canin (Supposedly for GSD) 175 cups in a bag (<----wish every dog food had this on it!) he would eat 5-6 cups a day $59.99

Innova Red Meat 30lb bag. 3 3/8 cup a day $60.99

AvoDerm red meat meal and potato 26lb bag. 5 cups a day. $54.99

Natural (something) Grain Free Lamb and Potato 24lb bag. 4 cups a day. $52.99

Right now we spend about $50 a month on food anyway...according to my husband.

I thought he had a rather sunken look about his face and eyes (and point of bone on top of his head) in the earlier photo. He looks better in the latest photos. How does his face look now? It should never look 'sunken' even when a dog is lean. Also feel the bones in his neck, below and behind his jaw and in just behind the natural fall line with his ears, these should not be extremely prominent, but I have always found them to be when malnourishment is present or a dog is very underweight for their natural build.
