I used to feed organic Raw meat while I was based in the US, but now that I will be in Asia for a while, and since I am not entirely convinced about the cleanliness/hygiene of the Raw stuff here, I have been cooking the meat (lightly) before serving the dogs.  Of course I carefully take out all of the bones that can cause trouble (since it is cooked meat) but try and mix and match food.

Chicken neck meat is served with the bone in, and so is the chicken vertebral column....but the other bones are not allowed to be part of their diet (due to the cooking).

I love a really rare steak but I solemnly swear that I do not feel compelled to attack my in-laws' herd when they run by me.

LOL Chaz! I feed in crates too. Some of mine will be more protective than others. I can't even walk by a crate when it is lamb neck time. I leave their food alone though, don't need to take it away to prove my pack leadership. I can call them off it (for emergencies I make sure I can) even if it is the holy lamb neck...

I feed raw and only have to worry on full moon nights.

I have been feeding my English Shepherd puppy raw (mostly chicken) and have noticed that he is very "oral-fixated"--much more than my late Border collie mix who was kibble fed. He is always fixated on and grabbing at my hands and is extremely focused in on eating vegetation, pine cones, sticks, his own stools and chews on everything. He is 6 months old and I never had this breed before and have never raw fed before, so I was just wondering since he is driving me crazy
!  I am seriously thinking of switching to kibble...can someone talk me down off this roof of disappointment???

You may have something else going on here, such as lack of a balanced diet, he may be trying to get the nutrition he is missing from the vegetation and poo. I have been feeding a balanced raw diet for years and have had no problems. Movies and television shows showing Dobermans and Rottweilers eating raw beef and turning into flesh eating monsters advanced this idea into our culture.

Don't fall for the superstitious wives tales and stupid pet lies.

If your dogs are competitive for meatloaf, then they will be even more so with the raw.

This current generation of pet people did not grow up being told to "stay away from the dog or leave the dog alone when he is eating". Pet people think that everyone should hang around the dog when he is eatting like it's a family reunion picnic (when they don't even eat together at mealtimes).

Just separate your dogs to where they can't steal each other's food and to avoid the fights. You will also need to find places that can stand getting messy. I feed one in the second bathroom in the tub. I feed another outside on the grass, not on the patio. I feed 2 in their crates and wash the pans out every day. One good idea I read somewhere was to feed them on a plasic outdoor tablecloth, fold it up and put it in the fridge and wash it every few days.

This pet people fascination with dogs and food aggression is only fairly recent in my lifetime. I guess it's because pet dogs and cats, are now considered children and should be fed on the couch, on the floor in front of the tv, on or at the table, with forks and spoons, on china or crystal, etc. surrounded by all of the family hustle and bustle activities.

Think of all the shelter dogs that have been unnecessarily put down due to food aggression.  Most working dog folks just say leave the dog alone, it is natural for the food aggression to be there, don't fight it because you have other more important things to train the dog for.

Just my opinion.

Smile...... Thanks.   Yeah we are on our way towards raw.  Getting the meat in my area at a reasonable price is a bit more difficult than I thought it would be.  Paying $4 plus dollars a pound gets pretty expensive for 5 dogs.   Right now we are still at the treat level until I can find a better supplier.

Consider joining the Carnivore Feed Supplier groups on FB and Yahoo to identify raw food suppliers and co-ops in your area. There are also Canadian versions - Canadian Raw Pet Supply and CFS-Canada.

Hey Fawn,
I feed all my personal dogs, 9 of them raw, one is a black lab, they all know their own spots, where their dishes are and all go to their spots when feeding time comes around. Never have I had a fight over the raw. Even the black lab, knows where her spot is, none are aggressive, they ALL sit and WAIT, till I tell them it is OKAY to go ahead and eat. I can take away anything I want from them, even my purebred wolf I once had, ate raw, and I could take anything away from her. It is all in the training. Any Kid could take a bone away from my purebred wolf and she would immediately drop it...so what you have heard is an OLD WIVES TALE!!!!
All mine are happy and shiny and full of life. Ask BeeTree!!!! ;-))))
Steph
