For my female, I use a diaper. She can still push it aside and clean herself and I actually put a menstral pad inside as well so I don't have to wash the diaper every day or two.

I put one on her when she was young a few times and she never really bothered with it, so when it came time for her first heat, no big deal.

I have 1 intact female and 1 intact male living in a 2 bedroom apartment and I can honestly say that I have no huge issues with the female going into heat every 6 months. I just separate them, rotate crate time and continue on as normal. Both still go to training and out and about with me, but my female does not go off lead during this time at all.

It's only a problem if you let it be. Find something that works for you and your lifestyle, if not then do what others have said; spay or get a male.

On the question of taking in-season bitches to Shows / Training, etc,  no one seems to be noting that it is not very fair to other members / exhibitors, as it will distract their dogs by leaving enticing scent everywhere.

As far as training, our club makes the girls in heat train last so as to not be a distraction...we also have members that demand complete obedience from their males regardless of distraction.

The blood lasts about 2 weeks. Not 2 days. I just mop up behind them and they are only allowed in one or two places in the house.

It's really not that bad and lasts about 2 weeks. She stays inside all of the time and I just put a diaper on her.... which I expected her to immediately rip off and chew up but she is totally fine with it.  I would go as far to say that she actually likes the diaper.  While in heat she also becomes very needy and snuggly :)  I'm not sure how normal that is? This is the first female I've had.

All in all its a bit inconvenient but it's really only 4 weeks of the year.... I wouldn't decide to NOT get a female just because of that. But, to repeat most of the others, It's what works for you and your lifestyle.

At our club (schH), we encourage members with intact females to continue training as normal when their bitches are in season. Yes, it is a distraction but why not work through this (everyone) during training where you can have some control of the situation and prepare for those moments?

At a trial, there is no telling what you could run into so why not be prepared?

I understand the inconvience of having a bitch in season on the training field (I too have a intact male and an intact female who both train/compete) but it is something that I work through with him. A working dog is just that - a working dog - it shouldn't matter what the distraction is - if the dog has it, the dog will work through pretty much anything. Yes, this is asking a lot from the dog, of course.

I know a lot of members will volunteer to go last, etc.. which is kind, but for me, I bring my dog out whenever and expect him to work with me, no matter the situation.

It's really no big deal to me either. We have 3 females that are in and out of the house. One, you would never know she was in heat. She keeps herself spotless. Another is a pig! LOL. Dropping all over everywhere, but it's no big deal to clean up. She just has more kennel time for a couple weeks. The last female is half clean and half pig. She loves her kennel so she stays outside.
To me it's not a problem, and all part of the fun. Take Care

I agree wih others--it's not that big of a deal to clean up. Both my girls cycle at the same time so I just keep rags,a can of carpet cleaner and the mop handier then normal. Both of them are fairly clean anyway. I keep an old blanket on top of the bed to keep my spread clean.........
As far as shows, bitches can be shown in conformation in heat but not in OB --this is AKC anyway. In conformation it is proper to inform the judge they are in season. For those who think its not fair when shows are limited in your area or you have waited a while for a certain show or to have enough competition to win competition points, it wouldn't be fair to not be able to not make a show because nature decided to kick in that particular weekend. At the shows I have been to, it seemed to all work out with no problems.

My female is a very heavy bleeder and it goes on for almost 4 weeks. 2 weeks would be a blessing. The doggy panties made for bitches in heat work well. I use Tena pads instead of the doggy ones because she bleeds so much. She sleeps with us, so I have to be careful to keep her pad changed.

The class where I train does not allow in season bitches and they are forbidden at AKC OB trials. They can be shown in conformation, but I never did that because of the distraction to the other dogs plus the judge will get that scent on his hands if examining an in season bitch. As most probably know, an in-season bitch is not banned from trialing for an AD, BH or IPO title.

I've had purebred dogs for almost 50 years. The pet bitches are always spayed as are the bitches that are not longer intneded for breeding. None have ever died because they were spayed, but 2 died because they were not - pyometra.

When I made my last post on this thread (seems so long ago! lol) I had the
Show Ring in mind, more than the training field.  They are at closer quarters
in Showrings.   Here in the UK we tend to moan about anyone who takes an
in-season bitch into a class, although as far as I can see the Kennel Club
hasn't ruled it out.  Traditionally it wasn't "the 'done' thing";  but in modern times
it has become more frequent.  Kinda look at it this way:  if we dislike people
throwing liver about all over the ring floor, if they have a 'baited' breed in ahead
of us, how much worse if all the other dogs (and probably bitches) have their
noses glued to the floor because someone's bitch is leaving a lot of interesting
scent ?  Plus it sometimes turns some males [who are usually easy-going]
into scrappy psychos with each other.  Neither is very condusive to standing and
moving your dog.
