Forget about metal choke chains for training. Nylon chokes have some uses.
A Prong collar is the most effective and humane "manual" collar there is. Even in the hands of an idiot they are limited by design to how much damage they can do. You sure the heck don't need to pay a "professional" to teach you how to use a prong collar. Google "Michael Ellis Leash pressure" pages of info for free on a VERY
effective and humane way to use a prong collar

Good information Swingfield. I am advancing my training techniques and just starting to offer my services as a basic commands level trainer. I had never used a pinch collar before and was looking at that if I get a peticular stubborn dog. In no way will I use it until I am 110% confident in my ability.

Thanks Dobermannman. See my previous post. As I am considering this technique for my public training, I cannot afford any mistakes on my side by the wrong use. So far none of my dogs really need it, but I do have a lab /rotti mix going into 2nd year.....so my options need to be open.

back in the 80's.. before I went to school for dog training.. I thought I could tough it out on a shepherd that was donated to our dept for an area protection dog.. well I put a pinch on him.. and he took it like the collar was 'biting' him. and he took me on!! I look back now of course and would know what to do and how.. but I thought dang it I can handle this dog.. He took me for a run for my money and I got bit pretty bad!! The head trainer had work him pretty hard with the choke untill they had their 'understandment' and a reckoning!! We all have stories.. but I learned that not all dogs can use a pinch!! LOL.. they actually take it as a bite feeling.. makes sense !!

Someone mentioned a leash that allowed for back up / have a back up collar on. I am stuggling finding this type of set up. Maybe what I am looking for is wrong. --------------- "I have a prong collar" How do I use it in conjunction with a regular nylon collar for back up? I am not finding a leash that looks like it will work for 2 collars on a single dog and allow for a correction on one of the collars. ----------- What am I missing?

fawndallas, leerburg sells a specialty double clip leash that clips to both prong and dominant dog collar (or flat collar or whatever-2 collars).

I prefer the prong collar. I never see good dog people using choke collars, with the exception of the fur saver. Fur saver BTW IMO is not effective for corrections. And I personally use the e collar as soon as possibly makes sense. They are great for off lead OB
