If this is Pano it will just take time and likely a change in diet to adult food as previously mentioned. Please make sure you seek another opinion prior to any major treatment such as surgery as this is not a normal treatment for Pano. This is typically an issue in fast growing dogs (such as Great Danes specifically the males) so seeing this in a Shepherd is not unheard of.

For basic information this is a good website: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1561&aid=466

Another thing to watch is to make sure the joints are not hot to the touch as this may mean the puppy could be suffering from HOD which can cause perminant damage if left untreated. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2084&aid=446

Best of luck.

Short term, either Rimadyl or aspirin is "ok". ANY drug can have deadly side effects for some dogs. You just never know when and if yours will be affected. Aspirin can cause terrible bleeding. There are no "totally safe" meds, so you just use them in moderation, with as much common sense as you can.

For my pano pup, I used MSM from the feed store that I give my old show horse. I think it is helping.

I agree with most of what has been said in this post, my experience of Panno was to watch the protein level in the dogs food (lower the better) and very restriced exercise (not confinement in a cage ) you still need to keep the dog mobile but under control so I exercised on the lead all the time. If the dog is walked on his own and doesn't do a loonie when you let him of then gentle loose exercise is fine and not to much, little and often as opposed to 10 mile hikes. Panno im my ex rights itself (varies from dog to dog) usually between 9 to 12 mths. I have used Loxicom which is a pain relief and anti inflammatory, the screaming may well be a dog that doesn't tolerate pain well (not a diagnosis here) like I dont (Im a wimp when it comes to pain). Some dogs tolerate pain some dont just like people. If the dog were mine I would wait a while and see if the condition improves. Hope everything works out okay none of us like to see our animals in pain.x

I would also look for a new vet. I don't trust a vet that recommends surgery for pano.

Nope, she has it wrong, they aren't recommending surgery for Pano (sigh of relief), but if it's 'something else' that she can't remember the name of!

Anyway, the x rays have been sent off to a very respected ortho referral centre which I am happy about.  It is just fingers crossed now that it IS Pano, and not something more serious.

Thank you for all your posts, I have passed these comments along to her.

Well, a complete surprise - not Pano.  Suggestion of an 'ankle' injury, owner has no idea how it may have happened, very careful in and out of car, pup doesn't do stairs etc.

Being re-xrayed in a couple of weeks, after resting.
