I started him on some natural detoxifiers, stopped giving him any processed food (chemical additives can lower the seizure threshold in a compromised dog), and never vaccinated him again. He also never had any heartworm or flea preventative. The only time he would have a seizure, and they were very few and far between, they were triggered by emotional upset, anger specifically. Sounds weird, right? I took him to a neurologist and they discovered the trigger for his rare seizure  was "anger" and keeping one of my other dogs away from him basically solved it.  This dog HATED that dog and would stare at him and growl from across the room until he'd have a seizure. So, I just separated them, minimized "sightings", kept him on raw and he had a seizure approximately once per year or less, on zero medication. A lot better than the cluster seizures he was having 3-4x weekly!!! They can do all kinds of cool tests if it comes to that, but my guess is in this puppy, it won't.

I will say that this was a Chihuahua, and much easier/cheaper to feed this way and easier to get around vaccines.

I work for a vet as a vet tech. I vaccinate mine until they get the first full round, then I usually just do rabies and bordatella after that. I know that some vets give Lepto and the dog flu vaccines. I've seen many dogs have reactions to the Lepto vaccine, we never used the flu one. I don't recommend not doing vaccines in pups, just because they can get Parvo and Distemper fairly easily, and it can be life-threatening. However, I'd not give Lepto or the flu vaccine. Just my opinion.

Could the puppy been exposed to deicing salt? Deicing salts can cause seizures.

I would definitely ask the breeder aout the pup. It's important for you to know since you have the pup's littermate. If this pup got into something, you don't need to worry. If she reacted to a vaccine, heartworm preventative or flea/tick preventative it's important for you to know because your pup can possibly react the same way.

FYI, my rehab vet, who sees dogs with all sorts of physical/neurological issues, some seemingly caused by vaccines, is convinced that we over-vaccinate our dogs. There is a lot of research to support this too.  Puppy shots, spread out, and the follow up vaccines at a year are all a dog needs. Titers can be done every three years and as long as the titers are good, there is no reason to re-vaccinate. Unfortunately getting the Rabies vaccine is the law, so that's hard to avoid unless your dog has a serious medical problem.

I also want to add that I have a dog that had cluster seizures a few years ago. She was put on epilepsy meds, but I weaned her off of them. Like Jenni, I  put my dog on a raw diet, detoxifying supplements and I never vaccinated her again.  I have used a flea/tick preventative only twice. I have taken other numerous precautions as well, but too many to mention here.  She hasn't had a seizure since the original episode.

I think I would wait for some real facts and not let my imagination run wild.

So I emailed the breeder and he said that the owner hasn't contacted him so he doesn't know what is going on. He did keep a female puppy from the litter and he said that he hasn't had any problems with his puppy. He said that he hasn't seen any seizures in the lines that these puppies came from and that I shouldn't worry about my puppy.

I do know that the owner does have the puppy on medication for the seizures and that seems to be helping but not sure that really means anything.

It is unlikely that they have given their puppy any flea/tick preventative. We don't have a flea/tick problem here and it is the middle of winter. It is much more likely that they puppy could have gotten into some deicing salt or that they walked the puppy on streets that have been deiced. Where I live the city uses a ton of that deicing crap on the streets all the time. First sign of snow and they are deicing. The city then washes the streets in the spring so that stuff sits on the streets all winter. The street that I live on doesn't get deiced and when I take my pup for a walk I try to keep as much on the sidewalk as possible just for this reason.

If my puppy was having seizures I would contact the breeder right away?? Makes me think that the pup did get into something and they know what happened. I guess this makes me feel a little bit better also.

So do they use Thimerosal (or a similar toxic preservative) in puppy vaccines? If so that would explain why raw diet and detox works for the seizures.

Thanks again everyone for easing my mind and allowing me a good night sleep last night!!

Oh, gosh, I would never put a little pup on seizure meds!!! Unless they are uncontrollable, those are VERY damaging (liver, especially) and are very difficult to wean a dog off of, though it can be done.

I just had 2 dogs go into seizures from drinking an excessive amount of water/snow. Their belly's were like barrels! What happens is that so much liquid washes out the sodium levels as well as other levels and they get sick. It took a lot of questions and research to come to this conclusion, but for both dogs to do it at the same time pretty much ruled out epilepsy, no toxins were found and in fact there was a third dog out with them that had no problems at all. Blood work was fairly normal until we got into the more in depth work.  We gave them pedialyte to replenish the electrolytes and sodium and all worked out fine. Scary moments though!!
Hope things work out to be minor for you!
