Best of luck to all who are testing;  I hope we can keep this link active with more and more tested studs; any and all dogs can be tested and should be as if you find out they can be affected you might want to start the specific protocol to help "PRESERVE' the best health and fitness possible for these dogs.  Nan

I am eagerly awaiting my results. My male's DNA was just recieved by the lab today 4/26. He is not yet titled, but we're working on that. Not only do we plan to title him in Schutzhund, but probably in herding as well (AKC herding). I will update when the results come in.

Hello GSD2727,

Excellent initiative.
BUT! There is a lot going on about the OFA test (or where ever the SOD1 test is carried out).

For visitors that aren't so active on PDB I would like to give just a few links.

I would like to point to the long topic on:  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/bulletins.read?mnr=536450 .
It could turn out Dr. Clemmons being right after all that this test is not 100% proof, especially not for GSD´s. We ourselves still use the test by lack of anything better.
The OFA did in fact change their explanation of the test, admitting now that it may not be conclusive.

Also; Dogenes in Canada is trying to develop a test to actually diagnoze DM, see here: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/forum.read?mnr=169816 .

Hope to have been of service,

I am fully aware that the test is not perfect.  I have spoken with people at the U of Missouri about it and got the "facts" from them.  They are also aware that it is not perfect and there have been TWO confirmed cases of carriers (in over 4000 GSDs tested) who were officially diagnosed with DM upon death.  They are doing more research to find out why there is the very very rare exception to the rule.

With that being said, I still feel it is valuable test for breeders to use.  Nothing in life is perfect.  We take what we have available to us and use it to the best of our ability.

Hip x-rays are not perfect either, in that you can breed two OFA excellent dogs and still end up with HD.  BUT your chances are better than breeding two dysplastic dogs to begin with!

JMO of course,
Valerie
