Serious Comment

This is a whitewash by the KC to court public opinion. After the fiasco with Starkstrom Lottery last year I doubt any of their vet's opinions can be given any credence - hips and elbows cannot be assessed by the naked eye.(Although I note that the KC only mentions lameness and I am sure the judge won't put up a lame dog!!!) We should continue to press for compulsory health tests as a pre-requisite for registration - the only way to take health issues seriously where a test exists.

For the Record

There will be plenty of GSDs true to the standard at Crufts. We must make sure the public get to see true GSDs at the show - whether or not they win!

As usual - there's disinformation here. Nowhere in the KC announcement does it talk about "fit for purpose". Nor does it address conformation. It simply says that a vet will examine the animal for a certain number of abnormalities and general health.

So why are all the 'German' owners so frightened?

then it should be checking fit for purpose and fit for life but as usual another cop out from the KC, dogs that are not health tested and graded with a BC breed survey should not be allowed to be shown at this the premier show in the UK.Now that would be a benefit to the breed here   and maybe telling joe public that the sire or dam are crufts winners might actually mean something. But i wont hold my breath i will most likely see flying pigs before i ever see that

Exactly right Jim.

... and nobody's frightened ... angry, knowing the KC for what it is, but nothing for US to be afraid of, our dogs can be and are shown WORLD wide under GOOD judges!

I really don't see what the KC thinks it is likely to achieve with 'clinical' observations only. The majority of severe diseases/defects are simply not apparent.

If they are instituting vet checks at Crufts and Championship Shows, it is a very small step to add in a requirement for owners to present the dog's certificates during the vet inspection in respect of HD/ED/Eye testing, or whatever is specific to that breed,  to ensure that  hidden defects are addressed as well.
No certificates, no entry - simples.

I fully agree - No Health Certificates = NO ENTRY

Instead of GSD exhibitors talking or writing or thinking - how about some ACTION?

How about much more ACTION on the "British" GSDL/WUSV Programme?

Looks like its prospects are being seriously diminished by inactivity and indecisiveness.

Just another thought on the KC statement. Will they continue to register progeny from any dog that they and their vets deem not worthy to be awarded its prize or the title of champion. What about progeny that have been registered previously.

What will happen with dogs that have already been awarded their title of champion. will the kennel club strip them of their title?

linda believe you me nothing will change they will still register any offspring from these parents and they will not strip titles or anything else because they want the money that is uper most in the KCs existance just like the ABBA song Money Money Money.

Abby, Excellent idea re producing health papers before entry, couldnt have put it better myself. Sadly Jim  is right, it will never happen. Hence the need for the development of the WUSV-Regional Group, set up by clubs that wanted to be free to organise and run events especially designed  to make Health a pre-requisite to sheer beauty, along with incorporating other aspects of a Fit for Purpose GSD, such as character and working ability. Thus ensuring that as far as Health, Fitness and Suitability for breeding is concerned we do far more than that dire condition called 'Lip Service' so regulary adopted by the KC with such consistency that they have not only mastered the art of Lip Service but have managed to take it to a new level !!!.

Linda, once again excellent points re breeding but then as we know the KCABS is yet just another string to the KC's Lip Service bow.

Regards
Sue b
