I agree with Phil, and I think you need to place the dog with an experienced  person sooner rather than later.

shrewsbai, you have a dog that scares you and it seems has growled and snapped at you. This is not normal behavior for a "sound" GSD to exhibit towards it's owner. Since everyone is offering opinions, I will offer mine. Place the dog as quickly as you can.

It does not matter the reason behind his behavior and I consider it poor advice to tell someone as young and inexperienced as you to try and correct issues such as this.

Do not wait until some is injured.

I agree with Phil, Gustav, Rik and some of the others....
I would suggest to place this dog with someone who has the experience to deal with the character of this dog.
Too many times, people want to try to "fix" a temperament problem with an animal, and without the proper experience or knowledge...it becomes disastrous.
....and.....although I may be crucified for this opinion...."I don't believe that trying to "fix"  or "adjust" temperament or character flaws is always justifiable....some animals should be humanely put down."
JMO...
