Why is it when the dogs fail every one else is to blame,i was at the show and i did not see any cruelty just dogs failing the bite.A number of dogs passed, was that with different helpers .Has any one else seen the dog with swelling on the head  nothing was said on the day.The judge passed remarks at how bad the bitework because the dogs were not focused comeing  into the ring.

Ok, maybe you are right, I was not there..  I just thought it very strange that only 4 out of 12 (wasn't that the figure?) passed.  Its like if most students in a class fail an exam you start to suspect the teacher or examiner...I have been to many, many shows, all with bite work and have never witnessed anything like that failure rate.  But maybe for Ireland this is something that is more new and both dogs and handlers need more experience.

If you look around the world in all honesty our Protection/ Bite work isn't the best, (working or show) to make us top , i think in general our expectations have always been set low, with more and more GSD folk wanting the dogs to be that working dog again more is going to be expected of the dogs being put up, I for one am in full agreement , their has to be alot of weeding out going on over the next few yrs, both in temperment and structure to acheive that goal, and if the judge isn't happy with the bite work the who are we to dissagree (to realy know anything about bite work you HAVE to of been training as well as having worn a sleeve to know  , Think the exhibitors that want top dogs need to have them out doing something, it's just a business for some, but some realy do have the GSD's well fare at heart and maybe they should be listened to ,look at yourself and your dog as if it was someones elses, befor you blame the failure on someone else
Sorry for any spelling mistakes or lack of punctuatoin, Dyslexia isn't  an excusse for me, x

WTF? They actually hit the dogs with the stick? What sort of 'sport' is this? I would personally punch the lights out of anyone who struck my dog in whatever situation. If thats what is required to enter these shows you can stick it where the sun does not shine. Give me the triangle and once up and down any day.

Just to clarify - the "stick" the dogs are struck with is made foam with a suede covering. Google "schutzhund padded stick" if you want to see a picture. The foam is about as dense as the stuff used to lag pipes. Its makes a noise when it strikes, but then so does a rolled up newspaper.

I found a video on youtube that shows what a courage test looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E09xVRKc6Cg&feature=related

Incidently, I was there at the show and at least some of the dogs that failed were not stuck at all because they shyed away from the helper without making the first bite. (edited for clarification to the response below)

I don't have an opinion myself but it's worth noting that the Judge (Frau Margit van Dorssen) criticised the training of the dogs and not the helper.

Maybe some of the dogs that were not struck had already heard they "would" be struck and bailed out early????
Seriously Folks, With a country that the sport or bitework is not prevalent, and judges and breeders that really don't promote training a showdog except for minimum requirements, and most importantly the dogs are probably from the same showlines that shows this result in Seiger shows in Germany and the States.....what in the hell is surprising about the results of the bitework!!!! Each year I comment about," as long as the Judges and the Breeders put up the same dogs with the same genetic bloodlines" the performance aspect of these dogs will decline. Each year this comes to past, this result at Irish Seiger show is not unique, the uniqueness is the creativity of the excuses to justify the results. Helper/Smelper.....its not the helper EVERYWHERE, EVERYYEAR!!

my name is desmalone i have been showing gsd.for going on 30 years so i think you could say me and son  dj love the breed..I attended the irish seiger show last week i made sure we were there for 7am as the bite work started early we recently bought a quenn male so were very interested my son talked about it all the time and could not wait to see it i am not one for complaining. the horror i subjected my son to i feel so guilty after the first dog went in to do wath i am told they should enjoy and should be wagling there tails for wath he was about to see would change his hole idea of bite work the tears flowed down his face when he seen the poor dogs been battered .i will never do bite work with my pup i tryed to contact the P S N I i am sure if they were there  there  would have  been charges for the cruell treatment of  the poor dogs..I hope the people with the power will never let this happen again..some one has to answer  for this i felt so sorry for the true gsd lovers i hope they all recover and go to a proper seiger show in england were the handlers will not batter the poor dogs any replys please use your name as i did.???

The Brit Sieger will be correctly managed and hopefully it will have some success again. I truly hope so. I know Steve Byfield well who is the man in charge of the GSDL Working Group and he knows about the helpers and two years ago I dont recall any problems. It SHOULD be the same helpers so get prepared.
Desi we have known each other for the best part of 20 years and I am so sorry for DJ.
Over the last weekend the judge said about the Irish show that she felt it was mostly the preparation of the dogs in her opinion. She felt that the helper could have been more consistent but worldwide it was not ALL about the helper.

Anyhow good to see you mate at Weston Park take care.
