From what I've seen, the lighter colors will fade or brighten with the seasons and in sables/agouti colored dogs, the change can be easy to see. From what I've seen, and I may be wrong here, black may only get a red hue from too much protein or sun. It seems your concern here is with his black color.
My remark was that some people have different likes/dislikes about masks, color & coat length.
Ares' father is a Long Coat. I posted a picture of his on his pedigree. I took that picture at a family outing and he was neither well groomed nor stacked. Kaiser is a very nice looking dog, but he also has a lot of defense drive and he's territorial of his home/property against strangers.
From what I've seen, it is easier while the dog is a puppy (not so large) so you can use a table when you groom him and place him in the position to brush him. I did'nt do that, so I went to this website and found enough that worked for me. Do it often enough and the dog will get comfortable with the process/posture. IMPO, I prefer the natural stack (the one the dog assumes when alert) that is not as contrived or radical as the posed stack so favored in shows.
Speaking of which, I do need to get a more current pic of Ares stacked.

Miles the dog you posted on first page is not a bicolor. Bicolor MUST have distinct tarheels, toemark "penciling" and NO tan behind/around ears, belly or shadings on face other than the distinct tan markings bicolors have.
This pup is a "coatie" technically long-stock coat, his fur will come in at first coat-blow and yes I think he will have a beautiful thick and long glorious coat. He is a black/tan or black/red, time will tell how much lighter his tan markings will get and how much they will spread.

Good looking pup. Tomorrow I'll put up a picture of Reiker as a pup, I think 8 or 9 weeks. I just found today, I'll look for more. But for now you can see his long coat on my post, "Here are my GSDs" I swear his hair is a good 8-9 inches long. When he's cleaned/brushedit's a beautiful thing but you talk about a mouthful of hair driving down the street sometimes if he's up in the front of the truck.............
And that Aries, Charlie, MAJESTIC! When I first got Reiker, he wasn't the first choice. I was a police officer and the dogs were tested and on the first stages it was another dog. I didn't want to start getting attached to that one so I waited a few weeks later and the second stages of testing produced a different pup. And when I looked at who now is Reiker I saw a big ball of fur, looked like the pom pom on the end of a roller skate. And the first thing I said is" Man, that is going to be a lot of dog hair on my uniform and in my cruiser". Even when so particular over my uniform I never regretted it. Yeah, extra cleaning everywhere. But I taught him at an early age to love the shopvac!! I turn that thing on and he'll back right up and take place for a vacuuming.
