It's been a very depressing thread for me too, and I'll never understand how one could put down his only dog because of HD, especially when there is a child who loves the dog. I know my kids would never forgive me if I did something like that to our dog... Jantie, I really DO hope that you thought this over at least a million times, and you are SURE you do it in Indy's best interests, not as a statement to a breeder. I am just seconding VomFelsenHof here...

I am also wondering why there has been no response to the question - could this dog have suffered an injury? I give up! This poor dog is going to be killed regardless of what any of us have to say.

Not sure why my previous post got deleted, I think it was because I posted a link. Anyway I'll write it again and post the link under a different entry so Saoa can delete that instead of my whole comment. If it gets deleted email me for the link mbecker1@ptd.net. I wanted to bring up a different theory on possible causes of HD or unilateral HD besides injury. There's a suppliment called "Prevention" sold by an American Bulldog breeder. They state that HD can be caused by stress in young dogs. Dogs naturally produce a very low amount of absorbic acid. Stress further depleats the low amount of absorbic acid which effects the amount of collagen produced. Collagen is essential for healthy joint development. Having a dog with unilateral HD I racked my brain trying to think of other possible causes other than gentics. I find this theory very interesting especially when reading their "stress factors". One of them is "cropped ears, docked tails" Obviously I never did either, but for a period of about 3-4 months I had to tape her ears. This caused her a great deal of stress. I saw it in her eyes everytime I approached her with the tape in my hands, she knew what was comming. She was very good about it, but it broke my heart to see the look on her face, pitifully looking up at me with those puppydog eyes. At the time I had no idea it could possibly be affecting her health. This suppliment called "Prevention" is supposed to provide vitamins, minerals and herbs for your pet to produce enough collagen in order to produce healthy joints. I would definitely consider using this suppliment on my next pup, it appears to show excellent results. I would like everyones' opinions. Regards, Melanie

hopefully we can get into a friendly enviorment... Stephen (even know we have our disagreements) your post touched me. I would not put down a dog who has hip problems. I do have my limitations. once the dog becomes older and starts showing signs of pain... and not being able to get up without being in pain... I then would know what would be the best for the dog. I cannot stand seeing a dog in pain. It effects me mentally and physically. I was wanting to know if you achieved any Tracking titles on this girl Stephen? Judging by your posts... she would of been a SUPER tracker :D Jantie, Please think carefully before making an appointment to the vets office to schedule an Euthanasia. DON'T do something that you might regret later.

Jantie, why do you continue to post photos of this lovely dog and his buddy when you are intending to put him down? Please stop, it is heartbreaking. Why are you doing this to us?

Birdy

Janti- You say..."He will be put to sleep very soon now." PLEASE Don't put him to sleep. If you wish not to keep him, many people here including myself. Would be willing to take him into our homes for the rest of his life. Please reconsider ending his life. Sincerely, Birdy...

That's a wonderful offer, Birdy, but I guess the dog will be put down regardless and Jantie will get another puppy. Hopefully, the next one will be perfect and will be allowed to survive. People like Jantie are the reasons why I no longer breed dogs.

i had not been on the board or following it but today saw this and the pictures. What I see in those photos is an itelligent dog full of love and life and I see a child who adores him. He has photos with the child captioned my buddy! How can you even think of euthanizing him just because of this? Give him to someone here who will love and care for him. Many here would love and enjoy him if you dont want to be cruel and selfish? He is gorgeous, not just in looks either, the light shining from his eyes his total trust in you! I hope he never figures out what you think of him.

by zvkmm on 25 April 2006 - 13:04

To Jan: Why don't you answer, now, when you have everyone's attention? So far, after all your posts, you failed to justify euthanasia. Yes, Indy has HD and EPI (according to your post on April 7), but is he terminally ill already? He's not even 3 yet... Don't be afraid not to show up for your appointment with that clinic. They could always make x-rays later. Indy's life is too high of a price for proving the breeder wrong or guilty, whichever... To Saoa: I hope you are not removing Jantie's posts. If Pakistanis could get away with F-words on this board, there is no need for "selective spanking" in this thread!
