Every dog is diff. you can't go by others outputs.Would offering/encouraging more fluids help?? If shes out with your other dogs and they go, maybe having her sniff theirs might make her wanna go where they went? Why did you have to pay for a misdiagnosis with the whole sock thing? That makes me so mad, Sorry I have Vet issues : )  , I am now with a Vet who I chose after seeing 5 diff. Vets! When my last Shepherd was misdiagnosed and all said he had 6 mos. I searched and searched for 1 who could give me better news. I never found one. But in the end he went on to live for 2 years without treatment. (The surgeries would have killed him) I know their human and they go by what they have learned, but if they don't know they should do some research or just plain say so. They get paid enough. I now have a new Vet for my new pup and after his first visit, I'm having issues again  haha. Back to the yellow pages?? Hope your dogs doing better today, hang in there.

I owned dogs for 30+ years and it just sucks the last 10 had been filled with lousy food and textbook symptoms to serious diseases (huge bills). We could feed anything in the 80's all dogs just did have as many problems. You have to be the your best judge but, remember not ignore the vets analyze use the numbers treat the symptoms (take in to account your inside the box) do your own research (Do not believe everything you read check your sources). Keep the faith, just slows down the training that the dog really needs. Discipline, exercise, reward = respect maybe someday you just can keep to what is important these GSD are SO intelligent & have an uncanny ability to phyc you out too. Hoping for the best for everyone, always.

Sam1427 - I'm going to stake the dogs out next to the tent at night........out of poop shooting reach.......

Last time we went camping Sita brought 1/4 deer carcas into camp.....half rotted.........they get into stuff either way. We camp on our own property so we can let them run. Good time to chance a food change. if they are still shooting poop after 7 days, I'll switch them back for the last 3 and by the time we have to leave, hopefully they'll be back to normal..........

Midnightsday - 30 years ago, what was the average lifespan of a dog, has it increased or decreased?

Glad to hear about the stakeouts and camping on your own property, Sitasmom. LOL.

Sitasmom and Midnightsday, I started in dogs in the '60s. Back then there wasn't much choice of food. Just Purina Dog Chow, maybe a few other brands and butcher's scraps. Mine did fine on dog chow and scraps. I had GSDs living 13 -14 years and Rat Terriers living nearly 20. If you look at the obituaries and memorials for GSDs in glossly magazines, the GSD showdogs are now living 8 - 12 years and 13 is considered a real achievement. Terriers live longer than GSDs, of course.

is their food too rich? too much protien? not enough fiber? bad breeding? what do you think the reason for the shorter lives?

our dogs are free to run all day, we used to let them sleep with, but we got no sleep - dogs are thermarest stealers.

we started staking them out, just out of reach of the tent or they'd eat throught it.

this year we have a HUGE tent - 10x16 8 person tent.......we're going to try let the dogs with us again.

My last (and first) Shepherd, Fredrica (gig Fredie) lived to be 15, and she died peacefully with me and my family at home, She was and will always be my best friend. 15 years was still not even close to enough. Dogs just don't live long enough and that is very sad.

She ate Eukenuba for most of her life.

Yes, unfortunately Wellness does have it's food produced at Diamonds facilities. That's why I went with Orijen, but I have a hard time getting it now, too. I'm using Evo, & I add Innova Adult canned dog food to my girls kibble, she has never regained her formerly hearty appetite, & now is a slow, picky eater. But she's alive, & if we had waited a few hours longer, she wouldn't have been. A dog's gut can go south in a hurry, only a few hours can mean the difference between life & death.  My vet & her surgeon are wonderful, I can't say enough good things about both of them. They were supportive, caring, & professional; & we owe them Ansgar's life. When I was standing in the office waiting room at the surgeons', after just telling the doc to put her to sleep if it looked too bad, I felt so lost, & the receptionist came out from her desk & hugged me, gave me tissues, & assured me she would stay & call me whatever happened....& it turned out the surgeon stayed with her that whole first night, called me so late to let me know she was OK...great folks! It's too bad your experience sucked, shop around for a good vet now while she's well, so you feel more comfortable with them should you ever have another crisis. I really lucked out, my vet is right around the corner from me, she's a very real lady, she's not out for the almighty $$$, & she sends you to the right place if she knows she can't deal with it.  It's a good feeling to know I can rely on them. jackie harris

Is anybody using or has anybody tried Wysong?

Mystere

 Tomfmal,

I agree with others--the vet should have been able to tell a gas pocket from a sock.  I have friends with rotties who have ingested mass amounts of "foreign objects" before being opened up.  One was opened up and found to be blocked by a couple of tampons, a pair of pantyhose (the WHOLE pair), a couple of socks and part of a tennis ball.   Lord only knows how long all those things had been in him, before he reached "critical mass" and had to be opened up.

I feed TOTW, salmon version.  I feed it because it is one of the things my male has done best on (based on solid stools), other than EVO.  I, too, worried about the high protein content of EVO.

I have found that bitches often don't want to go potty outside of their own yard.  One of the things I LOVE about having a male, is that they will whizz anywhere.  Just take them out to of the car and they go.   The bitches?  I have to plead, "go potty, go potty..." and half the time, they won't go away from home, until they cannot hold it anymore.  I had one bitch that did not go at ALL from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, because we spent the entire weekend in Canada and she only wanted to "go" in her own yard.   I had once had to transport this bitch from a show back home to go potty, then return to the show.  It was 40 miles each way!!   She eventually got over the nonsense, but it took
years.

Kalibeck and others......

If you have good stories about vets giving excellent care, please tell us the name and address and phone numbers of them so others who may live in the area will know.

Best thing we can do is help each other find the best vet care we can for our dogs.

There are so many average and less then average vets.....lets help each other.
