Hi Terry: Thank you for Canto. You are right, I would love a young copy of him for sport or Police. He could be my partner any day. You are right, this is a ridiculous thread. Eric

GSDONLINE: Why don't you sign your post with your real name? I know ALL the dogs you speak of and have worked many of them. Many of your statements are incorrect... Dre, is back in Europe and he was very aggressive. Quite sharp and dog aggressive. Cabre is excellent and can be bred. His brother was put down because of unfair handling. His potential was never reached but Cabre is a better dog. Sign your posts with your real name and I can answer all your questions.....I am lecturing ERIC LUKE

Sorry, I meant to continue and say that I am lecturing at a National Seminar on Police Canine Selection this spring. If you are a Police Officer, you can attend and see what most departments are actually looking for in Police Canines. After the lecture there will be a "round table" discussion to discuss possible sources for what K9 depts need. There really is quite a difference in what you believe Police Departments are looking for and what they really need. It may be beneficial for you understand this if you are basing an entire breeding program based on some unfortunate misconceptions. Eric LUKE

MR. ERIC LUKE. THANKS FOR YOUR CANDOR. NO COMMENTS ARE INTENDED TO UPSET ANYONE. DUE TO EMPLOYMENT CONFIDENTIALITY CLAUSES I AM UNFORTUNATELY OBLIGATED TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS AND THUS USE THIS BOARD FOR ADDITIONAL FEEDBACK--I AM ONLY STATING WHAT I HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATED--VERBAL OR WRITTEN(ACCURATE OR INACCURATE), BUT LOOKING FOR ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON WHICH TO BASE MY SUGGESTIONS UP THE LINE. OBVIOUSLY ANY FINAL DECISIONS ARE ONLY MADE UPON ACTUALLY US PHYSICALLY SEEING AND TESTING THE DOG'S ABILITIES AND HEALTH. SORRY I AM NOT A POLICE OFFICER, ALTHOUGH WE DO DO SOME CROSS-REFERING. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DISCREET FEEDBACK YOU CAN PROVIDE AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU WITH A WORKING PRIVATE E-MAIL UPON YOUR ACCEPTANCE

Eric Luke, Thank you, what you wrote sounds so much more realistic.

GSDONLINE, I am Cabre's owner so I just wanted to reply to your comments on him. First of all, I think that you are right that he is not a dog that you would be interested in. He is a fantastic animal and very well balanced. He has strong hard aggression towards the helper and enjoys the fight immensely, quite a few people have complimented me on this. But unlike what you are looking for, he also has exceptional prey. I have been lucky that my helpers worked with me on this so that we developed his drives so that he did not become 'locked' as a young dog. For me, I think that he is an almost perfect representation of the German Shepherd for working purposes. On the field he is aggressive, powerful and hard to contain, at home he is content and can be trusted with children and in crowds. I would not consider him to have 'civil aggression' in any way. I'm not sure why you think that he cannot be bred but I think that he has some superior qualities that he can pass on. I will note though, he is not always an easy dog. I was fortunate enough to have Horst & Michaela Knoche from Germany to help me gain his respect as a young dog and since then have only had minor issues with handler aggression in training. As far as his brother goes being a better dog, I believe that all three brothers looked very promising as young dogs. When all three were together at about a year they all looked quite sociable and bright eyed. I don't know who you are so I will leave it at that. If you or anyone else has any questions feel free to email me.

I would be very interested in something like that. I do not want to eliminate any dogs from my breeding program that would be good for police, but just isn't the best Sport dog. I don't want to breed for Sport only. I was under the impression that the kind of dog the police was looking for was one with good hunt drive within his tracking abilities, that had a natural tendency to be very observant and reasoningly evaluative of human behaviors, to be driven by civil (protective-defensive)drive rather than just prey drive, and to be very trainable. What do you say about this, and about any lectures/sessions available for us non-police? I will also say...I was a Little Rock police officer many many years ago : )Back then, the K9s they had did not strike me as being under complete control, and some were possible dangers to their fellow human officers.
