To Sue B

Sue, Tom was around 7 years old when it first happened after a visit to the kennels.  Antibiotics soon cured it.  Same again the following year and againg cured pretty quickly.  However since a two day stay at the kennels two years ago we have not been able to clear it up.  I am convinced it is stress related as his previous owner left him at home alone for long periods of time.

Gordon,

That sounds awfully suspicious that the root cause is contagious and the rest is from it having gone chronic.

Good luck, I hope that you can get it figured out and it's something that can be cured.

I went through similar with my Willow.  She was on antibiotics for over a year before I changed vet & the new one diagnosed a food allergy.

She was put on Purina HA first of all this is not only an exclusion diet (it contains only soya & corn) but is also extruded in a way that further reduces the allergens.

It is important while they are on this food, which ascertains whether they have a food allergy) that you do not give any other food or treats. You also remove all raw hide chews as they are meat based & flavoured nylabones, etc.  If possible keep the dog on leash in the garden & on walks so that it cannot scavenge (perticularly dropping from other animals)

After a few days on this food willo's stools became nroaml for the first time & her apetite improved.  A month later she was able to come off anitbiotics for the first time in a year.  A month late she was moved onto Purina DRM which contains ground whiting & she was able to start putting on weight.

We were unable to introduce any other food stuffs after this as she seemed to be allergic to everythig else, but the DRM has kept her in excellent condition, her body weight is spot on (in fact we had to put her on a diet last year) and her coat is beautifully soft & shiney.  Most importatly she has only had diarrhoea once in the past 2 years!!

Good luck!

That is REALLY bizarre, considering that corn and soy are two of the most common food allergens in dogs.

If it was my dog, I'd stop all meds immediately and feed the dog turkey necks for a month.

We went through the same scenario with a Boston Terrier and he came with the IBD diagnosis and a slew of prescriptions and a prescription diet.
Turned out he has Celiacs Disease (sp) no grains - kibble etc...
Not saying that is what your dog has but the folks that surrendered this dog had been paying big vet bills
for a year and the vet was way off. Infact the prescription diet was making him ill.

Funny you say he cant eat chicken.  This dog cant do beef. So I have him on raw duck.
Its working and it has taken 2 months to gain 2.5 lbs.
The meds also reek havoc he was on steroids and a ton of other stuff.

I am not a vet but try holistic when possible....Chamomile helps soothe the stomach and relieve stress...its takes 10 days to get into the system but I sprinkled that on the raw.
Also I have this paste it coats intestines called - diarsanyl for dogs horses and calves...
Small meals help too well for me.

I feel your pain and no it is frustrating and horrid to watch.

Hang in there.
Carolyn
